Manasquan Inlet Report 7/17
« on: July 17, 2008, 10:55:49 PM »
Was up at the Inlet on the Point Pleasant Beach side tonight from 1930-2200 hrs.  Did not fish(spur of the moment outing with the kids), but I was an excellent observer (I also unhooked fluke caught by a large family that had no idea what they were doing!). Incoming tide, 90 degrees, very humid, wind out of the south, hazy/cloudy, some grass, but not too much, lots of boat traffic(Thursday Night Fireworks), but the water was not so turbulent(seen it much worse) and a good amount of people fishing in front of the parking lot.  Heavy Coast Guard Activity to the North around Manasquan/Brielle area about 100 yards off the beach.  Lots of short fluke being caught(12-16 inches).  Did not see any keepers while I was there.  Baits of choice were Gulp 4" Swimming Mullet in pink and white, killies, white bucktails with frozen spearing and/or squid strips.  Wish I was fishing, but it was a good night out with the family anyway!

Thanks Pfishingruven for the report.  I do the same thing with the family especially when all three of us like to take pictures, fishing usually takes a back seat.

Nice report. Lost9340 was there also, trying for fluke, but they cut it short, said there was way to much baot traffic due to the fireworks. He also noted the Coast Guard activity, as if they were searching for someone, but I never did hear why they were there.

Hi Garry,

LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of boat traffic...seems to be the norm for a Thursday Night.  Boats were 4 and 5 deep across the Inlet.  Definitely made it tough to cast if you were worried about hitting one of them!!  Their wakes were putting water up over the wall at some points.

Coast Guard was definitely doing something.  Had a Helo up in the air and 2 Cutters.  They were about 100-200 yards off the beach on the Manasquan/Brielle border.  Helo was doing a search pattern initially when we arrived.  I was curious so I walked out onto the rocks.  At this point it was almost 9pm and the helo was hovering about 10-20 feet above the water 50 yards in front of the Cutters toward the beach.  They hovered for a good 25 minutes.  The rotors were actually putting up quite a wash.  Then as if nothing was going on they took off flying south along the beach and looped over the Coast Guard Station and the Inlet and were gone just as the fireworks ended.

I checked APP.com when I got home and this morning, but nothing was in the paper!

I don't worry much about hitting them. There used to be a 26 foot regulator that fished the entrance of the canal, and everytime I would catch weakfish, he'd motor right into the spot I was casting. Nice shiny clean new boat, and a rude captain to say the least. SOOOO, one day I got ornery, and put on a 2 ounce diamond jig when he motored into the spot I was casting, and somehow, I managed to smack the side of his boat with the diamond jig, LMAO. I yelled 'Sorry, Im not a very good caster'. He gives me a wide berth now whenever he sees me, no matter what I'm catching.

thats funny i have been on both sides of that myself. your casting from the wall, catching fish and the boats move in. its messed up, never hit one though. i did get hit with a 2oz sinker in the boat one time, i wrapped that braided line around a cleet, started the boat and kept going. you should have heard that dude yell as i took all his line. i just smiled and waved.
