Engine Alarm
« on: June 30, 2008, 07:39:53 AM »
I went to start up the boat on Saturday A.M and found the battery had died.  Apparently, last week, I turned on the bilge pump when I was putting on the console cover and didn't realize it.  Tried to re-charge the battery and had no luck.  Bought and installed a new battery and when I started up the engine the engine alarm came on and stayed on.  Checked as much as I could, but couldn't figure out the problem.  Oil and coolant seemed to be OK.  Fuses were all OK.  Anyone have any idea what the cause could be?  I dropped the boat off at the mechanic's shop yesterday and am waiting for the verdict.  I'm betting it's not cheap, whatever it is.

The boat was docked. I did hook up a fresh water line to the engine to flush it out just in case I was getting build up but the alarm was still going off after I did that. I checked the oil reservoir in the engine and it was low so I topped that off and the alarm was still going off.  Maybe a sensor issue?

HOW LOW WAS THE OIL ? IF IT WAS TO LOW MAYBE YOU GOT SOME AIR IN THE LINE AND THAT IS NOT GOOD.  was the boat out of the water when you ran it and was it pumping out the water?

the oil in the engine reservoir was about 1 inch low.  The main oil tank was almost full.

Everytime I have had an alarm it was oil or heat.........Being as the oil is filled maybe you have a bad thermostat...or she is not pumping water........

I would check the battery. We have seen it a lot where people have changed the battery and then a problem started. One wire fell down and ddn't get hooked back up. Make sure all of the wires are on the battery.

Could be fuel restriction alarm as well.

Not sure if your merc has it, my Johnson 2003 2 stroke does.

If you haven't done so already, make sure you don't have grass or a plastic bag or something blocking your water intake.

This might sound too simple but if I dont have  my lanyard hooked up to the cut off switch the alarm will sound soon as I turn the key.  5hrug

If you have a Optimax check the owners manual, it should narrow it done for you by what type of alarm you are getting,i.e continious alarm means on thing and short alarm means another.
