someone told me last week they were on a head boat flukin and someone hooked up with a small mako. mabey a fish story but i'm sure its possible. fish follow bait like nick said, so i would say yes. my buddy rick was on his kayak and in the middle of a big bunker school the other day off brick beach, and says there was a huge shark that came underneith his yak. said he was pretty freaked out, around 10 foot he said. he is not one to bs,sharks are there.

Right now there are numerous brown and thresher shark jumping the bunker schools. We have been hooking up with them during the past several trips. Have yet to get one to the boat, but that is because of the small tackle we are using. Lighter lines being chaffed and parted by the rough sharks skin.

Had several sharks make jumps out of the water after being hooked. Awesome sight!  t^

I haven't heard much chatter on Mako but there seems to be plenty of Browns and Thresher inshore and alot of Blues offshore.

Last week we brought two 4 foot brown sharks to the boat on 30 lb braid. This was only 3 miles off shore in long branch. We were live lining bunker under a pod hoping for stripers.

Blue fish works great for makos as well as chumming. They normally (mako) aren't quite that close if that's your specific target. We usually find them off wrecks anywhere from 10 -30 miles out. But as Joe said plenty of threshers and other types closer to shore right now.
