Saturday Evening Magic Hour Fluke Report
« on: July 26, 2008, 10:31:14 PM »
Well my son's friend had a baseball game & my wife backed out, so it was just Jason and myself tonight aboard the Misty Morn.

We joined the 18 other fares that fishe da slow night in the back bay. We started off by the #47 and I stuck to game plan of bucktailing. I dropped a nice fish right off the bat, that I followed up with another dropped fish. Third time is a charm and I put a keeper in the box. We had a fairly good drift at this point with an ebbing tide and a WSW wind which propelled us almost directly down the channel. However the wind swung around to a more SSW direction and the bite substanially slowed. Made a move east off Lemon Creek but after a few drifts and maybe 2 shorts for the boat we heqaded back to our original area. By now I switched over to dragging bait. Actually was using a double spearing on the bottom hook and a GULP 4" new penney shrimp off a dropper.Even with 6 ounces of lead I had to let out a good deal of scope to remain on bottom. Had a real hard hit but missed the fish. Reeled up and the GULP was gone. Put a new one on and it was long before I had a solid bite and hook up. A nice 20" put on ice.

Fishing was slow as evident by only 8 keepers (that included the #5 caught by the captain). I was high hook with 2 and also the pool winner. I also had 2 shorts and a pair of sea robins. Jason had 3 shorts, 3 sea robins and a bluefish.

Forgot to mention that the channel (at least in the back bay & I'm assuming the entire length) is loaded with bait. Was watching the machine in the wheel house and it was lit up like a x-mas tree.

Nice report, Congrats on the fish and POOL ! Jason must be having a ball fishing with his Dad so much.

Jason has been fishing with me since he was 5 (he's now 13).

He accompanies me on 85% of all my trips. Besides fishing here in Jersey, we've made several trips trips to Quincy Mass. for flounder/cod, Point Judith Rhode Island for fluke/stripser, a trip to Oswego NY to fish Lake Ontario for king salmon (Jason caught a #33-biggest on the charter boat in the past 10 years & one of the top ten fish caught that year), a trip to the Florida Keys , a charter in St. Thomas and a trip to the Outer Banks for tuna/wahoo & mahi. In 4 weeks he'll be joining me on his first overnight canyon trip.

Its been great watching him develop into the fisherman he is. In the last 5 years he has easily taken more pools than I have. Call it luck or skill, the end result is still the same. On more than 1 occasion I've seen guys NOT enter the pool because he was onboard. I've also seen him take more than 1 whistle fish to steal a pool.

He has the potential to become a truely good fisherman. Only thing lacking (at this time) is concentration as sometimes he gets bored (samething in school-go figure).

Ok, I'll stop sounding like a proud dad... ;D

No foul in bragging about your son and his great angler abilities!!  It's a great thing and I enjoy reading about how well a teenager does fishing on this list...as compared to reading about one in trouble in the newspaper!

I can't wait until mine is a little older.

Congrats again to both of you on great catches!!
