Weakies making a showing in Northern Barnegat Bay
« on: July 30, 2008, 01:54:57 PM »
Weakies are finally making a showing in nothern Barnegat Bay, hopefully numbers and size will increase by the end of the week.

A guy reported taking 6 weakies at the Mantaloking bridge the other night. I believe him, because while in Pells, he said the got them on pink sluggos, and then proceded to buy every pack of pink sluggos they had, he wouldn't have done that if he didn't get the weakfish on them.

Also, today, mid day, Lost9340 went out with Joey in his boat, over in the Dales Point area and the mouth of the canal at the southern end there, and they got a few spikes, on pink gulp mullet. They said it was frustrating because crabs were biting the gulp up, but they caught weakies mid day, and also saw others catching some.

Good sign of things to come I hope.

Garry

Ive never caught weakfish before and have a question. How would I catch them at the Montaloking Bridge. I could probably get down there next weekend and would like to try to catch them. What should I use to catch them? Thanks.

Gymrat,
Most weakies are caught around here on pink, pink is the ONLY game in town, LOL. Pink 4 or 5 inch Fin-S fish, pink sluggos, pink gulp is coming on strong this year, and I think with the scent, the pink gulp 4 inch mullet will ultimately outdo all the other pink baits for weakies. Fish any of them on a single hook jig(plain jig, no hair or bucktail or anything), anywhere from a quarter ounce to an ounce, depending on water flow conditions. Cast out, let it sink to the bottom, and jig it in, reeling slowly. The trick is to find the right weight jighead so you're at the bottom, but not dragging bottom that you get hung up on snags. Hope this helps you.

Do you use a teaser above you jighead with the Fin-S?

Njdevil,
I personally, never use a teaser, but thats not to say they're not effective. I just find them disagreeable and cumbersome, another thing that intereferes with casting, gets hooked on my guides and line, snags brush(and me), and most importantly, picks up a lot of cabbage and weed where I fish. If you use a teaser for weakies, remember, pink is the only game in town.

I tied up alot of pink teaser and I am hoping the work for me down on Sunset Beach in Cape May in a few weeks. I will fish them and also use a pink leadhead with a pink Fin-S.

Hey Garry I have been using teasers off the surf tipped with Gulp shrimp and have been doing pretty good.

There has been a little grass in the surf but nothing that would not make you want to fish though.
