Rod Building Jigs
« on: February 08, 2007, 07:06:14 PM »
Ok.... Monday was the first day of our rod building class....

I'm planning on an addition to my shed as well to facilitate a deer processing station for the deer season and a rod building station between jan. and the start of the fishing season.....

Anyone have any jigs?  Or plans to any workstations, equipment etc.... I've been coming up with some ideas of my own but love to collect plans to any jigs anyone has....

Anyone else rod build?  Would love to swap ideas or techniques.
- Dennis

drome,
i build and repair rods. i actualy have one turning behind me right now, drying some cp.(by the way its flukedoods).  you can get those cool fancy ones with a foot pedal controlled motor but im kinda old skool and still use a hand turner.  i never got comfortable using the motor, tension feel is off and id rather do it by hand so i can watch every wrap closely. this is only personal opinion and doesnt neccesarily reflect on quality of work coming out of a motor turned jig. with that said, any jig will do. its a matter of comfort and PATIENCE.  any questions you have or when it comes time to buy materials, blanks or anything contact me, i may be able to help you out (a little better than those internet stores).

One day I will try fly fishing!!!!

Do you use the same turning jig table without the motor or do they have a different setup for hand turning?

Any jigs or setups you use for guide spacing?

Nice work on the rod btw.

you can use the same rig, just dont attach motor. but like i said, that is all personal preference.

dont use guide spacing charts as a bible.  you can start your guides according to a chart but then you must static test that blank.  basically after your handle is on attach a reel, tape guides in the place and then run line from reel through eyes and then attached to a heavy stable object.  then pull up on the rod as if fighting a fish and inspect the manner in which the line follows the rod blank.  you want the line to travel on the same plane as the bend in the blank, no hard angles.  move the guides to get a good spacing.
doing this is one reason people buy a custom rod. you can static test your factory made rods that are made accoording to guide spacing charts and find that each one will be diff. and not always perfect.

Ever make a jig that can hold the butt end on one side of the board, with a peg where you would hold your hand so you can load up the rod with a target weight loaded to match the reel and target fish weight?  Thus you can then tape the guides to the blank while the rod is in the desired stressed position?  Instead of the hit or miss eyeballing technique?

ive never built the jig, but some guys have it built into their wall. basically so then can "load" the rod and then step back and get a side profile of the rod/line curve
