burial at sea
« on: August 11, 2008, 10:18:05 AM »
This Thursday I will be taking My Aunt out to Scatter her husbands Ashes.

Red Skull, My fishing partner died a couple years ago from cancer.  He was 65 Years old.. Every fishing trip all he would talk about was buying a 25' Parker Pilot House.  He never made it to that day.

We will take him out past the 3 Mile line off LBI on his Dream Boat.

I searched the web for a procedure for this and can't seem to find anything.

Has anyone done the above.

Also found this. Which is probably more of what you wanted.

Methods of Performing Water Ash Scattering

There are three ways to perform burial at sea (ash scattering over the water) and all are very common;

1. Scattering directly from the container received from the cremation facility. The ashes are poured directly into the water on the down wind side of the vessel. With this type of scattering it is necessary to be careful that the ashes land in the water and do not get blown back or stuck to the side of the vessel.

2. Scattering with the use of a bio-degradable urn. These urns are specifically designed to gradually disperse the ashes back to the sea. A water-soluble urn will usually float for several minutes then slowly sink where it will degrade or melt back to the sea. The survivors will often toss flowers or petals as a final tribute as the urn slowly drifts away. It provides the family with a going into the sunset scenario.

3. Scattering from a basket. Your loved ones ashes are placed in the basket with rose petals placed on top. The basket is then lowered to about to 2 feet below the water surface and the basket is inverted. The rose petals float to the surface and the ashes disperse in the ocean.

Very nice Rod!  It is great to see that your Uncle's wishes will be fulfilled!!  I think this is the best type of burial, ever IMO.

I also see that if you want to get real technical, you can fly a black flag...that will signal other boat traffic to stay clear of you and that you are doing a sea burial.

Good find on the information Capt Joe!!

Here is a picture of Red.  Put a Bud and a Pole in his hand and you get this.. even knowing you have    Terminal Cancer.
