Eels
« on: August 15, 2008, 01:33:25 AM »
Does anyone trap their own eels? I remember setting a killie trap one night for fluking the next day and picking it up next morning and it being full of eels. Tried to do it purposefully 2 months later for stripers and came up empty 5hrug any insight?

you will only catch them in the traps over night, use broken clams, and crabs.  The best bait, but not easily available are horseshoe crabs.

as I recall that should read "not legally available"

be careful i do recall horshoes are illegal to possess or use for bait.

I can remember trapping them in the western part of Silver Bay Off Barnegat Bay  , we used bunker as well.

It is hard to get there now because of the condos,But if you have a shallow draft boat it still should be a good place to set traps for them.

Happy catching

Any tips for location? The eels I caught before were from the Rahway River (freshwater). I now live in Brick. Will any shallow salt marsh do?

I don't know if you live on the water or know anyone who does, but the lagoons are pretty good for eels.  Used to fish for them in the lagoons...

your success rate depends where you put the trap, but you can get them anywhere.  Under docks along the bulkked are good, but the best place is the thick marsh lands, or creeks.

eels can go in brackish water.  Most creeks are brackish as you go away from the bays.  Try the creeks that are closer to the saltwater. you have to keep moving the pots and experiment with them till you find a nice catch.

killie traps work, but not as well as they are much smaller and don't hold as many.
