Building a Minnow Pen

Has anyone done this?

Does it matter what wood. is pine ok?  Size of screen on the bottom?

My father built one every year when we would vacation at Cherrystone Campground in VA. He used pine and would run pine slats from on side to the other. The spacing in between slats was about the dia. of a 6 penn nail. He then drilled small holes in the side to let more water in. He did not need to add any floation material at all since it was made of pine, it worked very well. Years later when he had his boat in a slip in Rumson, he made on to tie to the boat at the slip each year. After a day of fishing we would put the remaining minnow back in the pen and drop in a few fluke after they were cleaned. Save alot of money on bait.

I use to make mine out of cedar but pine would be good as well.

yea.. I have plenty of minnows at the dock.. so i figured I'd make one.

1/4 inch holes let the smaller one get out .this way you always have the right size bait ,we use wire from home depo and zip tie it together that way when people steal them it didnt cost much ,plus we were able to hide them better

I have a real nice one I bought from Tuckerton a few years ago.  They aren't that much money, so the cost factore making one and buying one isn't that much.

 3$  in home depot bargain bin wood
 9$  6 3"x 1/2"x 8  furring strips
4$   box of 1/2" galvanized screws
4$  galvanized hinge.

I did space the furr about 5/16...  should have about 1/4 after it swells.  can use this for ells also come striper season.

Wood is so last centry.  
Make one with PVC and wire ties. last a life time...floats too.  

Wow...very different from what I was thinking but good work.

Boy does that bring back memories.  The only difference would be the door.  The one we made was totally removable with two pieces of wood running length wise on both sides of the opening and slats instead of a solid door.  The hinge is good but it will in time corrode out.

Nice work, now I will have to make one top show you what I mean.  Can you tell I am looking for things to do...
