FLUKE FISHING In Hyannis Mass 8/14-8/15 WOW!!!
« on: August 16, 2008, 11:18:39 AM »
Went to Hyannis Mass with Capt. Joe, Frank, Victor, Jim, and Mike, to do a little fishing on a private charter for 2 days. The original plan was to fish for giant sea bass, got a call on the way up found out last minute that plans changed so we had to switch species to fluke.  Because the trapping of sea bass for the commercial fishery was still open, our catch would have been impacted.

After our 6.5 hour journey we arrived, checked in and all met up for dinner and a fisherman’s meeting for discussion of our itinerary.  After nonstop laughs through dinner, and with a well developed game plan, we headed back to our rooms for a few hours of shut eye. I had the pleasure of doing the 3:30 am wake up call and roused everyone to ice down the beer for the boat.

At 05:30am we pushed off for a 1.5 hour ride to the fishing grounds.  It was a nice sunrise along the way and lots to see with the islands, just a boat ride in this area is worth a trip.

After we arrived at the grounds, the Captain did his job and put us on fish, non stop action all day, all big fish.  The keeper size limit was 17.5" and we had no problem beating that.  All the fish were in the mid to upper 20" for quite some time for the first half of the day. We had no problem limiting out so we played a little catch and release and traded out a few smaller live ones for a couple of nicer size ones.

WOW what a day!  This is fluking like I have never seen before or even heard about. You would have to be there and see it to believe it... What a phenomenal start for the first half of our trip. We were so busy catching not 1 picture was taken; everyone caught and caught and caught. We had plenty of laughs, plenty of beers, and great sandwiches prepared by Victor.

On the ride in, the fish were so plentiful, we helped the mate fillet the fish and pack the catch.  We all worked great together.

Day 2 of the trip was much of the same as the first, just unbelievable.  We all were on fire and all big fish nothing like our fishery here in Jersey.

This was an awesome trip that I would recommend to anyone.  If you like to fluke fish, this is one word,"Impressive".

Great place for the family, lots to do, and the guys can fish till they pass out and by the looks of the quantity and quality of the fish, the guys will not be disappointed. I would go back again. I might even take a trip at a later date with my family just to take in all the sights and shops.

Thanks to the Captains and Crew of the Helen H we all had a great time.  Most of all, a great bunch of guys got together for a bunch of laughs, spirits, food, and fishing, what more could you ask for...  chrz

The boat was actually the Fish Hawk, an affiliate of Helen H. The trip was awesome. It was supposed to be a repeat of last years jumbo seabass trip. However, with the commercial pots still all around the captain did not feel that we would have a good catch. The way it was explained was; The commercial traps were placed in a possition that would have made it impossible to set up a drift or anchor with out getting caught up in the commercial gear. He said the fluke fishing was good and Friday was the last day of the season. So, we opted for the fluke fishing.

Good call on the captain's part. We limited out and then some on both days. A lot of big fish up there. Don't know why we don't have that quantity of quality fish down this way. No double digit fish on the trip but many over the 25" mark. Many more just below the 25" mark also.

I did manage to get some pics, but not a lot of action ones as we were all too busy to want to miss out on the catching.
