launched at Sayreville at around 6:30 with regular fishing buddies Dave and John and headed straight for the 19 can in the reach,made a few drifts and came up mt.headed further up the channel and set up again drifting by the 9 can,picked a few shorts and headed over to the red side and was able to stay in a long drift right on the edge in the channel on the red side,again a very slow pick of shorts.I did drop a couple nice fish though,I was using a 2 oz buck tail jig with a squid strip and a plain fluke hook with a squid strip as a teaser.John and Dave were using squid and smelts,we tried at the ramp with a killie trap to get some killies but no success, I think because of the dead low tide. stayed in this drift all the way down past the 14 can.I wanted to run out to the Ambrose where the fleet was but I'm not sure of the fuel consumption on my new motor,I run two 12 gallon tanks.so headed to back bay and set up for a few drifts and came up with nothing,made one last ditch effort before going in with a drift by the sand barges South Amboy and I landed the only keeper of the day just over 18 inches.headed in about 2,used only one tank of gas with still maybe a gallon or gallon and a half left and just over 35 miles on the trip log.so next time out I,m bringing an extra 5 gallons and I'm good to go. great day on the water and a pleasure with the new motor after fighting the old one for two years.
