When the Canyon calls? Fish On 8/24
« on: August 24, 2008, 09:25:33 PM »
I was recently invited on a six man charter with my good friend Keith Bush. The six of us were all set to hit the canyon and fight tuna. The weather could not be any better; conditions were to be like a bath tub in the canyon. We have been preparing and e-mailing one another for weeks. Everyone was in charge of something, sandwiches, snacks, sodas and beers. The boat was due back in the morning from a previous canyon run the night before. We were waiting anxiously for the captain to call with the report and time for us to meet at the dock. At 10 am sharp we received the call we all have been waiting for. It was Captain Adam LaRosa from the Canyon Runner. To our surprise he gave us the option to reschedule due to the lack of tuna action. At first it was like getting a Christmas gift you already have. The wind was immediately taken out from our sail. How could this be we asked? Reports were hit and miss leading into our trip but the weather was perfect. Canyon temps were ideal. The season has to bust wide open any day. We decided to take a vote and agreed with the captain to reschedule.

The big lesson here is when a captain calls and gives you the option to reschedule due to little action; you have to take his word for it no matter how prepared and excited you may be. Second you have to appreciate the captain’s honesty and reputation. At first we were all a bit disappointed and we need to do something immediately to satisfy the urge to fight some bruisers. We needed to save the day. Last minute we decided to take our coolers filled with food and beers and jumped aboard the Big Jamaica for night blues. Bluefish are always an instant fix for those who need to fish and boy did we need to fish. We left the dock at 7:30 PM for the mud buoy and arrived on a never ending school of bluefish from 8 to 10 lbs by midnight everyone on the boat was physically exhausted, cramped fingers and sore shoulders just what the doctor ordered. At about midnight I finally retired after playing catch and release with about 40 fish per man. The mates on the Jamaica never once stopped chumming and kept the fish around for 5 hours straight. We all had a great time fighting blues all night long and felt much better knowing we still have a tuna trip to look forward to at a later date. It’s situations like this that make you love fishing. You never know what to expect. Fishing can go from zero to sixty in 1 second. No other sport can match that. Thank you Canyon Runner, see you in October for the big fight.

Thats to bad Ron, but you have to go along with the experts and rely on their sense of the sport.  He could of called and said its a go and you spend all night fighting boredom.

Good heads up thinking and switching.

Happy Catching

Great report Ron. As you said, always listen to the Captain. He doesn't hold that title for nothing.  t^

Hi Ron ! The Canyon Runner's captain and crew are one of the areas best, and they just proved it again by not wasting everyones time and money with the rescheduling. FYI - I think October will be a better time anyway !!

I couldnt agree more. The canyon is no joke on any given day. Thank goodness there are true honest captains like the Canyon Runner to be upfront and set the expectations. He would of taken us if we wanted to.A the end of the day it was the best choice .October should be much better odds anyway. ;D

When you do get the chance to go with them, you won't regret it. They are as you say honest and the hardest working crew out there. If they can't put you on fish then the fish aren't out there.

Good Luck, looking forward to your eventual report.  t^

did you mean blue fin >:D as in BFT -blue fin tuna??  5hrug
j/k -you are correct.... but there is something about landing a 80-140 tuna (that almost everyone will eat) that get my juices flowing...

...but...you are still correct...

October will be here soon enough and anything worth while is worth waiting for. We're fisherman for Christ's sake, waiting is what we live for  rgmn

BTW My hands have just finished healing from those yellow eyed demons!

Cheers to the Canyon Runner crew for the heads up and of course the option to postpone.  It speaks volumes about their commitment to delivering the best offshore charters around.  chrz

Anyone know where the tuna are? 5hrug
