08/30-Upper NY Harbour Report
« on: August 30, 2008, 04:48:22 PM »
Jason and I spent 2 hours doing some ultra light spin fishing at one of our favorite local spots this morning. Arrived about 1 hour after the ebb tide begun.Jason caught the first fish on his second cast. Took me about 25 casts before I got my first. After that it was nothing for about 25 minutes. Once the tide started to move, there was bait being busted upon along ambush points against the rip-rap.

Our 2 hour total was 22 fish (probably evenly split between snappers and small stripers). Jason had the 'big' fish of the day with a 12" bass. I out fished Jason 13-9. Caught them on 1/4 ounce, 1/6 ounce silver Kaster Masters, small gold hammered Hopkins and 1/8 ounce gold Little Cleo spoons. Nothing on a either a baby Zara Spook or ultra light Mirro-Lure.

Great day fishing...the bays certainly are yielding more action than the ocean!!

Returned to the same spot this morning. Wind was now blowing in our faces which required us to cast 1/4 ounce lures in order to get some distance. Today there was maybe 2 or 3 surface blow ups on bait, where yesterday it was pretty much all the time. Took us a few minutes of casting to find the fish (or did they find us ???)--anyway we found them alittle further back on the tidal flat. Action today was as constant as we caught them in bunchs. For example I caught a 5 fish on 5 straight casts and Jason on 3, then nothing for about 15 minutes. We totaled 25 between us today with Jason outfishing me 14-11. He also caught the only 2 stripers today.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly Today;

The Good: Found a lure that I lost on Saturday. Had this lure since high school

The Bad: I lost 4 lures (3 Snapper Zappers by getting snagged in the rocks & 1 Little Cleo that has far as I know is still embedded ina snapper's mouth). Jason lost 2 snapper zappers to snags.

The Ugly: Jason out fished me 19-11. He was up 5-0 and it was never close. At one point he was up 14-5. I did however get the only bass of the day to save some face.

In 3 days we caught 77 fish all on ultra light tackle.
