Soft plastic quesitons
« on: May 09, 2007, 09:53:38 AM »
I've read about using soft plastic baitfish type lures for inshore and surf fishing.  I have used these lures for Muskie and Pike and was wondering how wide spread they are used for salt?  What weights, hook sizes, and jig heads are recommended?  What colors work best?  What situations do they work?

Joe I can only speak as far as fluke fishing is concerned.. I use berkely Gulp baits and love them.. I use them from the boat and from the beach..From the beach I use variety of Gulp Swim baits, Pogy, and jerk baits in a variety of patterns ( just gota switch off until you find out what is working for that day). For Jig heads, My favorite is a football head and I have sizes that range from 3/8 oz to 3/4 oz..There are other jig heads I use, as long and it keeps the bait moving as you bounce it off the bottom you are good to go..

from a boat I use gulp baits in conjuction with a hi lo rig with the weight being on the bottom. A plain hook  8" to a foot above the wieght with some type of swim bait on a 2-3 foot leader. then 10'to a foot above that I will use a teaser with a strip bait some times Gulp, sometimes a type of natural strip bait.. I will also use s similar rig just tied as a fish finder.. I hope this helps..

Thanks Fluke, what size hooks do you use?  The reason I ask is that in my freshwater fishing I upsize the hook to allow room for the plastic bait.  That would seem to make sense for salt since some of the plastics in these sizes are even harder.

The jig heads the hook kind of goes with the weight about a 3/0 to 4/0  When i use on my other rigs I use a 2/0 to a 4/0 depending on the size of the bait.. the swimming baits I use usually run in size from 3" to 5".. and these hooks size seem to work.. I dont lose alot of fish or have any problems hooking fish..
