Fall stripers
« on: September 10, 2008, 07:13:39 AM »
This will be my first year fall striper fishing.
I know this is posted here somewhere, but I can't seem to find it.

Can anyone tell me when I should start looking foward to fishing? I know it's not a date, but when does it start Oct -Nov?

Thanks
Rick

As the water cools, the stripers will work there way back in.  There are resident fish now, if you can find them.  WHEN?.. well, if we get a cold front, then sooner.. if not.. October then..

Look for the working bird.. ya might think they are bluefish, but the Stripers lie under them.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.

I usually start looking for stripers sometime after the September full moon. Although in recent years the striper bite really didn't start in earnest until mid October.

I'd usually start with bait such as eels but have also had some memorable days using clams (The weekend before Halloween in 2005 I was part of a crew that put over 50 bass on the deck with nothing under 30"s using clams). The clam bite gets real good around the time of the spider crab molt.

Towards the end of October I'll make the switch to jigging, although I'll still make sure to bring along the proper rod/reel/gear for eeling.

last 2 years the best striper bite 9at least for bigger bass) was in mid December. Sometimes the bite lasts past New Years
