Raritan Bay fishing 9/8
« on: September 08, 2008, 08:20:43 PM »
didn't leave home this morning until 10,wanted to let things settle down after the weekend storm, went with regular fishing buddies John and Dave, didn't know really what we were going to fish for now that the fluke season is over,we had some smelt and squid left over from our last fluking trip, plus stopped at the bait shop and picked up a couple dozen sand worms, hopefully thinking maybe some weakfish around and also a couple packs of frozen clams.launched at Sayreville and headed right out to the 19 can in the reach, the river and back bay were still murky, set up drifting in the channel,I had two poles out one with a clam and one with a sand worm,Dave had a clam on and John a squid strip, John landed the first fish a fluke just over 18 inches that was released.then we had fish on all 4 lines at once that made a mess of the lines, bluefish on all 4 but only landed 2,plus they snapped 2 of the rigs.continued fishing with no more action, when someone on the radio (channel 68)asked where are all the fish someone responded what are you looking for and there response was bluefish and the answer back was off the Keansburg pier all you wanted, being directly across from there headed over and found the birds working and started tossing metal, all the action we could handle, had a blast catching 3 to 4 lb blues on light lines.then we lost them and gave up and headed over to old orchard to try some baitfishing maybe seabass, but no seabass but John did catch another fluke that was released.didn't hang here to long headed to back bay to do some baitfishing before heading in,again saw birds working off Keyport and we chased and tossed the metal but nothing, made one last stop by Raritan Bay light house, again John landed a small fluke that was released, headed for home about 4:30,had 10 blues in the box we kept for some friends.beautiful day on the water, had some nice action for not really knowing what to expect.      Kez

Nice report Kez.
Tuff knowing that the best fluking time is just arriving and we can't keep them. The regulators really gave us the shaft.

Yeah, they certainly took the keeper part of fishing out of everyone's hands.  Best fluking still to come in the surf.  Couldn't get one all summer.  One of the few fish I eat.  I know I won't be happy throwing keeper fluke back, while surf fishing!!

it figures you get a keeper fluke when your not trying.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.

Kez, Nice detailed report.
Plenty of us feel the frustrations. rgmn.Went to the Marina tonight and the Head boats all had different signs posted as to what fish they are pursuing. 5hrug 5hrug.
Hopefully in a few days it will come together. :-\

You know that since the season is over that's the end of the shorts right? Every one we pull in will be a keeper now (if it wasn't the 9th of September)... that's a fisherman's life...

Nice job on tracking down the blues and good report.  t^
