Drowning crabs 9/7
« on: September 08, 2008, 12:16:24 PM »
Picked up some Asian Shore crabs and a couple jumbo male blueclaws early Sunday morning.  Hit some backbay shore spots to try and drown a few with Theresa.  Had alot of "life" early on, but as the tide cam up, the bite shut down.  Did manage to C&R 5 toy-togs with T getting shut out.  Only other action we saw were those targeting snappers.  Plenty of those and a few bait dunkers did manage a couple pilotfish and some short porgies.

F&G were out patrolling the land as well. slt

Nice report Gottog! t^  But since crabs live underwater, isn't kind of impossible to drown them?  Just wondering. ;) ;D

Nice catch on the little guys. Can't wait for tog season to open up.

Can you possibly get a trip together again this year? Last year was weather related cancelled.

Hope to get out more often for them this year.

Well if you keep the crabs in a bucket of water they'll use all the oxygen up and then "drown" ;)

Spot I usually get my Asian Shore crabs from had plenty of tiny ones and a few jumbo sized ones.  Not too many in the middle though. 5hrug

Blueclaws came out of a buddy's trap.  Had five jumbo jimmies, a few females which I released, 3 short porgies and a 15.5" fluke in it, released safely as well.

I could get another trip together if there's enough interest.  I do think just picking a date and all hitting the Sea Hawk one weekend would be easier instead of a charter.  Pretty sure we'll get a group discount as well TT^

I do have one charter booked so far with a group of guys that did get to go out last year as we usually get tog-gether at least once a year. Gotta see if I'll have any openings on that trip.

Jumping on for an open boat trip would work, as long as we are not elbow to elbow.  TT^

Capt Jerry, how do you crab in the canal??  Isn't the current too much that you need a cinder block??  I know if you say you do it, it is possible...I just can't figure out how??

Hey grooven, i do fish heavy in the canal with 6-10 ounces. 50 lb test

I use the crabs to catch tog, i dont actually crab if thats what meant

when the tides ripping i fish the spots that are close to the wall. when incoming or slow i go  to the casting spots.

Shot me an email

Maybe we can hook up and do some canal togging.

I go alot from now till it opens

I almost went to the canal Sunday but just didn't have enough crabs.  Figure it should be pretty good there already.
I like when 10ozs skips there ;)

Do have another spot I want to try in the back of the bay from shore.  Maybe this weekend if I don't get out on the Sea Hawk.

I did misunderstand what you had meant Capt.  I thought you were actually crabbing in the Canal.  I was just curious how you managed without a cinder block attached.  I have heard the Canal has been pretty hot for Tog.  Couple people told me on Friday they caught about 25 or so, all short...but short fish grow so that is good news!!  Thanks for clarifying.
