Mudhole Trolling - 9/13

Just got in today from an exciting day. Got out with a co-worker on his 23' Sea Hunt. Left around 7am and headed for the BA Buoy. Played with some small baitfish near the buoy while Al setup for trolling. We trolled mainly south for close to 2 hours with no hits. Got one that was on for a while and then lost it. Al said it felt big to him and was pretty bummed about losing it. 3 hours after that and still nothing.

Headed for the Mud Buoy and anchored up, started a chum and sat and hooked bluefish for a few more hours. Only took one home, felt pretty big to me. The rest we threw back, but it was fun on farely light tackle.

All in all a good day with great weather and blue water.

  I think the mud bouy is east of the shrewsbury rocks???

That sounds about right, maybe a little southeast. From what I could see on the GPS, it looks like its directly east of Sea Bright. I think 3-4 miles off?

Mud buoy, 6 miles off the beach, NE of Shrewsbury Rocks. Great for blue fish and can pull some nice seabass out of there too.

Mud Buoy area at GPS coordinates 40 22.2/73 50.6. It is the site of the 2.2 square-mile Mud Dump (officially, the New York Bight Dredged Material Disposal Site. ) For over a century this was the disposal site for sediments dredged from New York Harbor and surrounding areas. Bluefish seemed to revel in the dirty water.

The area is contaminated with PCBs, dioxin, petrochemicals, and lord-knows-what-else that accumulated on the floor of the harbor and was then dug out.  nosmly So much mud has been dumped here - over 200 million cubic yards - that it actually forms a mound above the surrounding bottom.

The area goes from about 80 feet up in the surrounding area to under 50 feet on the dump grounds.
