Jig ,Troll and Chunk - My arms are tired/Irish Ayes 9/14/08
« on: September 14, 2008, 07:21:54 PM »
Bluefish blitz, that’s the story. Shrewsbury rocks, the mud buoy are just a few favorite spots to play catch and release with big chopper blues. I did just that this weekend aboard the Irish Ayes with Captain Joe from Shark River. The Irish Ayes could do no wrong jigging, trolling or on the chunk, blues where everywhere. John Ozwirk, Pete Louie, and Keith Bush had unlimited amounts of bluefish and when things paused for a brief moment as if we didn’t have enough action, we played catch and release with a few dozen sea bass on the bottom.

Keith Bush did manage to pick up a striped bass on the troll just shy of a keeper but a great sign for better days ahead. Captain Joe chummed up 8 to 12 lb bruisers all day. Weather was perfect and ocean visibility was 15 to 20 feet with the bluest water I’ve seen in shore, in years. Thanks Captain Joe for a great day of fishing.

Further South in Barnegat Bay Capt. Steve Purul from Reel Fantasea Charters reported a nice mix of blues, weakfish and Striped bass up to 24 lbs. These are all good signs for a healthy fall striper season.

Off shore the story remains the same. White Marlin and Big Eye tuna have been saving the day. Yellow fin are a non event so far in September and with anglers working the chunk all night only to be saved by hooking into White and or Blue Marlin on the troll if they are lucky enough.Big Eyes too have been plenty but only appearing in the early morning for a short time. It’s a long night in the canyon with no or little action till day break. I will keep you posted on the tuna bite which I hope will turn on any day now. Fish On!

It was great having you and the fellows aboard today Ron. Couldn't ask for better weather or crew.  t^

The fishing Gods were good to us today. As you said, blues picked up on the jigs, chum and troll.

Can't wait till the next trip.

Capt Jerry, we saw the Bandit at the mud buoy today. Were you running it?

Some pics of our time at the mud buoy.
