who's hitting the beach this weekend?

that depends on where your limits to fishing locations are.  i am trying to see if the weather will work for hitting the beach in sandy hook again.  not sure if its gonna cooperate this weekend, or be like last weekend, which turned out to be slow.  let me know.

we need a east wind to get things going the hook is a waste of time in a south wind but heard its ok for island beach but a west wind is not good their

We need an east wind here too!  I heard there were tons and tons of pods of baitfish about 25 feet off the beach and not one taker in any of them from Seaside Park south to the Inlet!

from any experience i have or have gained through others, the surf is a waste during a south wind period.  the water temps drop too drastically and turn a bite off in minutes.  dont know how true it is about the temps, but i know fishing usually isnt good during a south wind.

A drop in the water temp is not so bad.  Stripers don't mind colder water temps...they actually like the cooler water.  I think any wind besides easterly winds keep the baitfish pushed out a little farther and lower the water level at the beach keeping fish off the sandbar, out of the cuts and troughs and out of the pockets.

Todays south wind, certainly didn't keep the baitfish away and the water temps didn't change drastically, there just wasn't a bite.  I agree with Paul too when he says the missing link may have a lot to do with the barometer!

Hi giys,

I can attest to the bait being all around.  I was at Ortley to Gillikins and the bunker were everywhere.  The problem was the South wind and the lack of any type of surf at all.  We had a high barometer which causes a higher pressure and effects the sea level as well.

The moon phase is slightly past half so the tides will be getting higher if the pressure allows it.

I am a big believer in watching the barometer.  The lower the pressure goes the better the bite will be.  It is a known fact that when the pressure is falling the fish seem to put on the feed bag as it usually marks that the weather will be changing even causing a storm to blew through which means that their food source will be scattered and harder to find.

So if you can put together a low barometer with moderate building seas and a full moon your chances for a good catch is a good probability.

If there was a good blow that went through and the barometer stays low for a few days again you should be into fish as well.

I know this is not scientific but I have been fishing long enough to see a trend and have fished this trend with more success than not.

It should be scientific !  If your theories could be tested, you would be 100% right.

The south wind definitely affects water temperature too, but doesn't affect too many of the fish caught in the fall and winter.  The prevelent south winds and lower water temperature certainly affected the summer fluke bite this year!  That was very evident!!

Hey Ash, sorry for hi jacking your thread.  I might be out on Sunday but not sure as we are taking a good friend and her fiance out to dinner on Sat. and my sister-in-law will be here for the weekend.  I am hoping to talk them into going to the beach for some R&R.

 either way... high pressure, low pressure, bait, no bait, fish or no fish, i am on the beach this weekend... I had the chance to hit it up this morning but passed. my pillow talked me out of it!

As soon as we get a low pressure front when this nice blue sky streak breaks up could really be it for getting hot.  A good front with 2 days of NW wind is what a lure fisherman looks for.  Id prefer it closer to the 20-22th but unitl recently its an early start. A good NW Gale in late oct into nov, I promise you equals blitzzzz, The best fish will come first for sand based angler.  So the first good cool front in next 10 days could be sweet.

yea, the last report i read on the weather was a balmy 70 something with winds not out of the east for the last week at least.  that doesnt sound like striper weather at all to me.  and who knows if the speedsters are in the surf.  havent heard of anything this year of them being caught, so that leads me to believe i should be trout fishing this weekend.
