Hunter 2 Wed Night Oct 8, Sandy Hook Rip
« on: October 09, 2008, 08:27:23 PM »
 5hrug
Left Keyport at 5:50pm and headed for the rip. It was a beautiful night ;). Stopped by buoy 11A of keansberg to check readings,  5hrug nothing,, We arrived at the rip just as the sun was going down. There was quite a few boats and they were trolling and drifting with no luck. We tried some drifting with eels, clams and bunker.  5hrug Nothing, So we dropped up anchor and put out 2 eels and 1 clam. We landed a Sand shark and a large Skate on clams. Nobody in the area seemed to be hooking up anything good. I was in contact with WB chrz who was not doing well and I heard Keith on the vhf 68. After a while we made a move towards the beach with no luck.
So we pulled anchor and went around the hook into the bay. Nothing 5hrug, Made another move more into the bay and Nothing :'(.
Time was around 11:30pm so we head towards home and stopped at the Keansberg hole 5hrug 5hrug,,, then Union beach 5hrug >:(.
Got back to Keyport around 12:15am We were disappointed and tired. I had to get up for a 5:52 train to the city :P
I found out today from a friend that he landed 5 keeper striper's by the Highlands bridge Tuesday night. chrz  So that may work out for you if the rips are not producing. ;) chrz

The drift sucked big time wed. No current and bad wind.
I wish I knew where the fish were that night. I had a guy out for his first bass trip. He got a short and that was it.

Good try!

LunaSea reported a few weeks ago that the Highlands Bridge was producing some bass back then!

When I had my boat, I always liked having someone send down a pair of big, juicy sandworms when drifting the rip. They might not catch biggest bass but they will put some quantity on the deck (including a decent amount of keepers). Hard to drift the rips when you have some trollers working it. My first few times fishing the rip were trolling plugs through it.

I always did good with sandworms drifting with the in going tide from the Highlands Bridge to about 150 yards south of the bridge. Used to be allot of snags in there & you really had to pay attention to what your bottom machine was telling you and either reel up or down accordingly. Another good worming spot was further up the Shrewsbury past the Rumson Bridge. We'd drift from the bridge to where the tugboat was tied up (not even sure if thats still there) or vice-versa depending on the tide. Used to call this stretch 'bull run'.
