PP inlet Herring/Shad tips?
« on: November 29, 2008, 11:35:49 AM »
Going to give the inlet a try for Herring or Hickory's on Monday. Anyone have any advice? What's the best stage of tide?  Is it worth hooking up a herring for Stripers? Never tried this fishery before..saw a few caught on Friday. Looks like sabikis and a small Ava were the ticket.

Sabikis will work.  I have caught them on everything from metal to bombers to rattletraps.  If you want to be more sporting try a 3" chartreuse curly tail grub on a small jighead.  Cast up-current and let your bait bounce the bottom as it swings past you.  A more aggressive stop and start retrieve can be the ticket at times.

A medium or medium light rod with 6# or 8# test mono, or 10# braid will add to the fun! ;D

I've never caught a striper by livelining them (but I don't liveline that often).  I have caught a number of fluke on them (used as strip baits).  They don't last too long though as they tend to get mushy fairly quick.

I have heard them called "poor man's tarpon".  But since I haven't had the pleasure of catching a tarpon yet, I can't say if that's accurate.  All I know is that they can be a fun way to spend the day, when there's nothing else going on. t^

What everyone else said.  Great info Bucktail! It sounds like a fun fishing trip for the NJ Tarpon.

Sabiki's work really well in there.  I have seen a lot of guys go there baitfishing for them and throwing them in a livewell.  Garry, had a lot of success there and probably still does.  I have had them on small kastmasters too while looking for snappers and blues.  Problem is, the smaller kastmasters don't hold up too well to the Inlet's current that well.  Best time is when the water is moving, either in or out.  It is more difficult to fish, obviously, but when it goes slack there the action really dies off and the snagging of the rocky bottom starts.  I would give it a try livelining in there...at worst, it might be good for some blues.

Good LUCK BNB!

Looks like it'll be incomming early in the morning on Monday. Hopefully it won't be raining.
