KLG
« on: May 29, 2007, 10:16:31 PM »
Today I went back to Sandy Hook but the beach was a pig stie and I wasn't feeling it so I decieded to head out to Ken Lockwood Gorge and see what all the fuss was about.  That place is killer!  I had a dozen trout around me and the little bastards wouldn't bite a friggin thing!(I really suck) Everyone I talked to there was assuring me that I'm not alone and it is a hard place to catch fish.  I did get a couple of bites though and learned a couple of things about the bugs there so I'll be ready for next time.  I can't wait till I get my motorcycle back on the road so I can ride it there cause the roads are nice.  I found my new favorite place!

I don't mind not catching fish as long as I have fun and learn!

Fly fishing klg is tough because most of the fish in there have been hooked several times and see the same flies everyday.  They are very smart!  If you want to catch fish there I suggest 7x flourocarbon tippet and do not use any nymph larger than a size 18.  I use 3 flies when I nymph, a hares ear wet up top, pheasant tail in the middle, and maybe a beadhead prince on the bottom with no weight at all.  Use a small pinch on strike indicator as well so you don't spook the fish when roll casting.  Also, it may be tempting to fish the slower pools since you can see the fish.  Those fish run on batteries, they will only look at your flies this late in the season.  Stick to the moving water and big rocks, there is usually a hungry trout behind each one.
There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot
