Cast Net for Bunker

Im looking to pick up a cast net and dont know much about them.  Ill be using it strictly for bunker and need some input.  Thanks in advance for any advice

Will you be using it for peanut bunker or adult bunker and where will you be throwing it? Off a boat, dock, beach, etc?

The answers will be useful to determine the size mesh and lenght of net.

You have to give some thought as to where and how you plan on using the net. Also,the cost factor and quality of the net should be considered.There is a lot of stuff around at different prices.

OK if this is your first net, you may need a year of practicing with a smaller net in the bays from land to get the hang of casting it.  If you feel ok with throwing a larger net, buy a 8-12' net with wide (1"+) mesh and prefferably 1.5lbs of led per foot or more.

I have one that I bought from http://skimmeroutdoorscom.easystorecreator.com/items/cast-nets/list.htm  I think it is a 12’ and could be the 10’ I will have to check. I purchased it last season and used it once. It is in brand new condition. I paid about 300.00 with the shipping for it.

HEre is a great video on how to throw a net, it is pretty eady to learn.

as has been said the key is practice.... I mainly throw from a boat, when I started I practiced in the back of my pickup in the driveway......gets you elevated, used to throwing in a smaller space and lifting over a railing TT^

I wonder how effective that would be off the beach.  I have seen some years ago guys throwing but in the past 10 years or so I can not remember seeing any at all.

My father used to cast the net off the beach, only if we could see bait.  It was much more successful at low tide or with smaller wave conditions.  It was usually a last ditch effort if we had run out of bait and didn't feel like packing up, going to the B&T or Bayside to throw, coming back and setting back up.  He always made sure he hit the Bayside to stock up on bait...it didn't always last for our outings, though .  He did have a lot of luck throwing into the Inlet from the North Jetty.  That was always a pot luck from there!

  I have a calusa casting net . I use it when I to Mississippi fishing for Sea trout of the docks it is a lot of fun . I never was the best at it but I got the fish. I don't waste my time going after the bait down by the hook. I will buy it and when the bunker is in the bay after I drop the boat in I will just go over to the guys and give them a few bucks and get fishing. Good luck with your net , it take a little to get the hang of it.

thanks for the info guys.  just got off the phone with mr.percy and im penciled in for april.  He's doing a seminar at the boat show in edison on feb. 21 at noon if anyone is interested.

I saw the link above and for me, its a difficult way to throw it.  My way is very similar with less steps, but it works for me.. Mind set is.. just pick it up and trow it, don't think about is so much.  There were times I could get it to open when i am alone, but stage fright in front of other made me fail.  This was in the beginning, so mind set is key.
