EPA Calls For 3 NJ Sites to Be Closed Due to Lead

SAYREVILLE, N.J. (AP) -- The federal Environmental Protection Agency has called for closing three sites along Raritan Bay because of high lead levels.

The EPA says it found contaminated soil at a beach in Sayreville and at two spots in Old Bridge. One is near the Laurence Harbor sea wall and the other is around a popular fishing jetty near Cheesequake Creek.

Officials say they're working to put up signs and fences to close the areas.

Mayors of Sayreville and Old Bridge are blaming a pigment plant that operated in the area until about 20 years ago. The EPA has not said who caused the pollution.

Lead exposure has been linked to neurological damage, kidney disease and other major health issues.

Nice find.  t^

Too many chemical plants from years ago were allowed to contaminate their area and then just walk away leaving their mess for others to deal with. Let's hope they can find who contaminated these areas and make them pay the price. Don't hold your breath on that though.  nosmly

Nice find Rach, it is a shame that companies are so oblivious tot he facts of pollution.  It was and still is all about the bottom line.  I can remember back in the early 80's a professor I had for Oceanography Dr. Stu Farrell was experimenting with IR photography to find the source poluton of the chemical plant that is now closed that was literally pumping raw by products right into the river.

Lead is not good... :P  Just another nail in the coffin so to speak.  That is one major reason I C&R.

I graduated in '81. I went for Environmental Science. I didn't have him as a professor but I did know him. I haven't seen him either. Stockton is a great school.

Plus you have all the commercial guys, crabbers from NY and NJ, dredgers for crabs in the bay, Belford boats...plus all the baitfish in the area, migrating fish, birds, marine creatures and the juvenile fish populations coming from there...EVERYTHING will be tainted and not just in the back or even just in the bay!
