Trout fishing in NJ

Yes, I bit the bullet this year and bought a trout stamp.  Now... Lead me in the best direction.  Jackson NJ... River or Lake.  If I recall correct, opening day is April 11th.

Prospertown has a good population.  I have had good luck to the left of the pier just as you drive in.  If you walk just down the hill toward the road there is a small (I mean small) feeder stream that usually has trout in it but they are extremely hard too catch unlike the lake itself.

Let me know when you go out I can meet you there.

They used to stock Lake Shenandoah in Lakewood with a lot of trout.  I haven't fished for trout in a very long time, so I'm not sure how many they still stock there.  The NJDWF has a listing of where they stock but not how many in each location.  http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/accesscnty.htm#Ocean That information used to be available.  Perhaps someone else knows where to find it.

The nice thing about fishing for them in a lake, instead of a stream or river, is that (at least during the opening weekend) you have more room to fish.  I've fished both and can tell you that most of the well known stream spots were elbow to elbow on opening day.

After the initial frenzy dies down you can also try fishing the Metedeconk off of Hope Chapel Road.

BTW, I've also caught them in Prospertown Lake.  As Paul said, from land you can fish near the boat ramp.  You can also catch them from the cement side by the parking lot.

i used to trout fish when I lived up north NJ, now down south, I rather do the lake.  I fished prospertown for bass, didn't know they stock it with trout.. So opening day, that should be the spot for me.

Prospertown and Assenpink would be mine.  The lakes in Lakewood are just to iffy, like Minetta, Carasaljo and Shenandoah.

I am very familiar with Prospertown since I am there bass fishing during the summer.  Now, by boat, any particular spots in the lake for the trout.

Believe it or not your best bet would be down the middle of the lake where it is the deepest.  Once the trout hit the lake they usually look for the deep water and come up to feed in early morning and late evening.

I have done pretty good up in the back as well; take the last finger of the lake on the left and go all the way back and fish the feeder stream of the spillway (far right hand corner).

I've found opening day at Prospertown to be better if you fish for bass while everyone else is fishing for trout. I feel the commotion caused by the hooked trout puts the bass on a feeding frenzy and draws the big bass in close to shore. Use live shiners and you will be pulling bass while everyone else is catching trout.  ;D Here is proof of my theory.

As far as trout locations around Jackson, I'll have to send you a PM. If I post some of the lesser known hotspots, places where there will be no crowds, but you most likely will catch trout , I'll have the good ole boys very pissed off at me.  <'((((><
I've spent most of my life fishing, the rest I've just wasted     <'((((><

I'll be out handling the angler surveys for the state at the Dennisville Lake in Cape May County this Saturday.    If anyone is going to be there, I'll be the guy with photo ID badge, NJ Fish and Wildlife hat and clipboard from 7:30 to 11 am.

After 11, the clipboard will be replaced by a fishing pole.   ;)
