Get Started with Trout in the Classroom
« on: May 07, 2009, 02:32:01 PM »
The Trout in the Classroom Program (TIC) is a supplementary educational activity supported by the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife and the State Council of Trout Unlimited. It is a hands-on; science based program that engages students, and helps to connect them to real life water quality and fish and wildlife issues and problems.

Students learn about natural resource issues as they participate in the actual process of raising trout in their classroom. Trout eggs are supplied free of charge from the Pequest State Trout Hatchery to participating schools in the month of October. Students then care for the eggs and eventually the young fish over the following 7-8 months.

The program encompasses science, language arts, mathematics, social studies and art. The curriculum is geared towards middle schools, but is easily adapted to the needs and abilities of students and other grade levels. An activity guide correlated to the New Jersey Science Standards is also provided.

If you would like to get started with Trout in the Classroom, are interested in learning more about this program, or have already gotten your equipment to get started next fall, then please register to attend one of our training classes.

The first class will be held at 5:30 p.m. on May 11 at Southern Regional High School in Manahawkin. The second class will be held at the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Education Center in Oxford on May 18 at 5:30 p.m.

If you would like to register for either of these training sessions, please contact Jessica Griglak at 908-637-4125 or via e-mail at Jessica.Griglak@dep.state.nj.us.
