Had Ryan, Pete, and Anthony on board for our first jigging trip of the year targeting bass and blues.
Broke the inlet around 7, ran north. Found bait and gannets almost everywhere, and jigged our arms off with only a couple of skates and a sea robin for our efforts. By 9:30, we were off Shark River, in the pea soup, still working readings. Nothing!
Finally by 10 the fog lifted, and we ran up north to where the jig fish have been biting. When we got there, I found some good marks, got the rods in, and in the next hour, we hammered the fish on krocodile spoons and 47's. At times we had 3 fish on. Mostly bluefish, but we were lucky enough to deck 2 nice bass, one by Anthony (39"/21#), and the other by Ryan (32"/13#). No other bass, the rest were bluefish in the 8-12# class.
Outside of that hour where we hammered them, we caught absolutely nothing. Ran offshore, inshore, south, back to the north, found a bird or two here or there - NOTHING. So, in the 8 hours we were out there, 7 of them were pure monotony, one was incredible with action.
All fish taken on jigs, the count was our two keeper bass and approximately 2 dozen bluefish in the 8-12# range, releasing all but 3 which are headed for the smoker tonight. Good day, just wish we had a better window of catching! Back at it tomorrow
