Had a 1 man gang trip with Hanson Brother #1 today, Mike. Broke the inlet at 0545 and found some bunker scattered, spooky, and spread out. Worked around a bit until a nice patch was found, and shortly thereafter we made bait real quick.
Fished around the pods until around 9AM - not a thing. So, we made a run up the beach. Found some life a little off the beach to our north - some diving gulls, some gannets divebombing, and fish ROLLING and slurping bait right on top. Got bunker right in the water - insta-bluefish.
Quickly changed over to Krocodile spoons, and it was game on! Lots of ferocious bluefish in the 7-14# range, but enough bass to keep it interesting. All bass were nice fat fish - smallest was 32", biggest was ~41"/24# on my hand scale taken by Mike. Easy limit we actually had it in 2 drifts.
We had fish on almost every time we dropped the spoon to the bottom, or had anywhere from 1-6 bluefish follow it right up along with a bass or two. Mike had a bass follow the spoon all the way to the boat, dropped the spoon back, and actually had the bass take the spoon only to have him promptly spit it out. Another big fish was lost by the other guy on the boat today the pig started peeling line, dumped a load of braid, but spit the hook after 5 minutes. Whatever the case -- It was sick!
We stayed with this patch of birds bait and fish until around noon time when the south really got cranking, but by then the bite was shutting down and the fish were really spreading out. Awesome morning of jig fishing, boated at least 50 bluefish and had the limit of bass. Can't ask for much more than that!
