Barnegat Weakies! 5/28/09
« on: May 28, 2009, 10:52:19 PM »
I took the ride up to Belmar late this morning to meet up with Capt. Joe and Bob G.  The plan was to head out of Shark River on the Irish Ayes to see if we could snag some bunker and catch a few big stripers.

Well, the weather that greeted us at the dock was a steady, cold, rain.  With a small craft advisory and the wind blowing northeast at 20 mph, the call was made.  Trip called off on account of "nasty". :P

I left Belmar still having the urge to do some fishing today.  So, armed with my light action spinning rod and a few leadheads and plastics,  I went out in the late afternoon to a dock by my house that's known to hold some weakfish at this time of the year.

The nasty weather had kept most everyone home and I found myself sharing the dock with only a half dozen other folks.  A few of the guys were having some decent luck catching small blues with a couple of keeper sized weakfish mixed in on grass shrimp.  I rigged up my jig and started off catching some cocktail blues.  Unfortunately I had only brought a handful of plastics and these little blues were doing a good job of destroying them. ;D

Eventually though, my jig managed to find its way into the jaw of a nice fish.  And, after putting up a great fight on my light tackle outfit, and an assist with the net from a fellow angler, it was landed.  A solid 5 lb. weakie!  Soon after (and in between some more bluefish action) I caught a very nice sized kingfish and then another weakfish, which was just over 4 lbs.

At that point I was out of baits.  It didn't matter though, as it was time for dinner anyway. t^
