Launched at 6 this morning planning on a run to the church for a shot at the bass.  Don, Big Don (Capt Don) and Nick Clementi.  Nick is now officially known as Nickshaw. He can pull a dock cart quicker than the hustling pedelers at the Atlantic City boardwalk. 

Sandy hook bay was flat as a pancake and the ride south was real nice.  Spotted bunker in the SH channel but couldn't manage a snag.  Not quite as far as the highlands bridge the bunker were thick and holding a couple hundred yards off the beach.  Trebles were flyin in no time.  We had to work it but Donnie, Nickshaw and I pierced enough meat to get the livewell good and bloody.  Miaggi (aka Capt Don) kept an eye on the pod and removed hooks from bunker with the precision of a surgeon removing sutures from a war wound.  With enough bait in hand and no marks under the pods we continued our travels south. 

A fleet of 20-30 some boats were already drifting the area with liveline and chunk.  In short order on a head, I have my first runoff.  I gave it a NASA qualified countdown and launched back only come up with a head that was scraped across the top.  Damn.  A while later similar situation.  Clean runoff, lock and load.  This time the only thing I bring back to the boat is a 9/0. 5hrug Sometimes fishing is just not right!  We continued to drift and poke around the area for about two hours with nothing else to talk about.  The fleet dispersed and we went to plan B. Time to make good use of the quality Squid Don bought from the Asian market and try to find the sea bass.

We found very good structure not far from the drift area and the C80 lite up.  We drifted this spot and boxed a keep and shorts then planted the hook.  Donnie also known for his Mcguiver techniques (he comes by it honestly from his dad) rigged up a marker bouy that we dropped on the structure.  Laid anchor and we had a pick of shorts and a bunch of ling for the next 45 mins. 

Pulled the hook and headed for rounds near the snake that has produced in the past.  That seemed to be the right move for sure.  We made a couple of passes on an area that has held fluke in the past.  This time we found a nice surprise.  We got a couple of more short cbass but also started cranking on decent keeps up to 3 lb.  The bait of choice for the keeps seemed to be SPRO tipped with squid or fresh bunker strips.  Big Don thought he was trout fishin.  He kept throwing his hi/lo rig with 8OZ up current and banging them right at the boat.  Today was his day for hooking up.  Meanwhile Nickshaw and I got iced.  Overall, a slow start turned into an excellent day.  We got out of dodge around 2:30 as the E/NE wind started to crank up.  Next time we're in the area of the church, I'm going to say a pray.  Maybe we'll get a striper or two.  ;)

I haven't broken them out just yet.  Waiting for a steady fluke bite to materialize.  I'll make sure the camera is with me for that big one!  Keep you posted.
