Pilot - Flukin with Skunk 6/23
« on: June 24, 2009, 12:36:45 AM »
After Skunk checked in at the hall to find no work (and getting a little what for from the BA) we got together around 10:15.  The local B&T shop had small live herring and picked up 3.5 doz for bait.  Launched around 11:30 out of highlands and came upon the fleet working the SH bay.  Tried a couple of drifts but no takers or touches for that matter.  Water was in ok condition but there was a fair amount of debris in the slick lines that made for quick games of dodge ball.  Thought we would head to the knoll but three netters were working the area and ruled that out immediately.  Headed into the keansburg area to pick a couple shorts.  Same in Keyport. Suprised that this section of the bay was as good a shape it was in.  Found plenty of flatties in the western reach toward the triangle area 40ft (jersey side of course  ;)).  Seas were flat, light winds, cloudy with periods of sun.  Temps 68-70.  Bait that produced... Spro dressed with squid with gulp herring teaser.  Had a pick of 15 fish, boxed two just north of 18".  Headed back up towards home to stop at the TC for a couple of short drifts. Swings and misses.  Over to the Coast Guard area and found a good bunch of fish laying in the sea grass waiting for easy meals.  Skunk boxed a nice 3.5 lber and we released many shorts.  Got a little too close to the CG station on one drift and the boys chased us out, but first ran us through the inspection process.  Good guys doing there job... It's a shame you can't get in on that place.... there are some big ones sitting in there. Too bad, guess I won't be fishing there anymore  >:(
