Buck'd up a limit on the Sea Hawk 6/27
« on: June 29, 2009, 11:29:21 AM »
I sailed on the Sea Hawk Saturday. Tried the sabiki rig before we left and had one small fish flash it and run off. Was hoping that this was not a sign of things to come  5hrug

Sailed out to the bay and started out with a brand new 3/4oz Spro in sandeel green. First 3 casts yielded 3 yellow-eyed demon in minature scale. Gave the three cocktails away and with my now basically bare leadhead finally started to catch some fluke. Switched from that bucktail to 1oz chartreuse off and on through the day. Tails from Gulp 4" swim mullet in white to smoke and PowerBait minnows as well. All seemed to work pretty good, but the smoke one seemed to yield better strikes and bigger fish. Managed 4 keepers with 2 going around 4lbs. Missed alot of fish and boated loads of shorts with most just being a half to a quarter of an inch short.

Towards the end of the trip with some nice keepers comming up around the boat, I went with a larger bucktail and bait profile. Went to a 2oz Spro tipped witht he Gulp 6" grub and the tried-n-true teaser(yeah, caved in and went back to a teaser) 3" split-tail Tsunami. Managed a 4.5lb fluke on the bucktail and completed my limit of 6 fluke shortly after on the teaser. TT^

Just got beat out in the pool by an ounce, but overall a pretty good day of catching. T was having a slight issue with her wrist so didn't bucktail much. She did add a nice 4lb fish to our cooler and my uncle also contributed a keeper to the cause. He also had another nice fish at the surface that came off right at the last minute.

Others onboard had some nice fish with catches ranging from 1-2 keepers, a good amount with 3, and some up to 5. Overall a decent pull of keepers with alot of shorts to keep you interested. Think I only saw a handful of searobins as well. Less trash, more fluke than anything  t^

Was suppose to have gone on a charter Sunday, but got home after this trip and was mowing the lawn...walked backwards into this stump and it took my ankle out thud

i was having trouble w/ the 2ozer myself the other day and the drift wasn't over 1kt

It ain't easy at times and sometimes feels like "work".  Need braid and light braid/superline at that.  Sometimes you don't feel the bottom and just have to "know" it's there.

Drifted channel edges and alot of power drifting which makes light bucktailing much harder as you have to constantly re-adjust...once the boat gets that push and moves, more often than not you need to reel up and cast again instead of trying to continue working it.  Very frustrating at times, but results can be very satisfying. TT^

With the 1oz I had no problems when others dragging bait were using 4-6ozs of lead.

In the past, I've used 1.5oz at Ambrose while others dragged 8ozs and complained.  Gotta work the drift and realize that you may only get a few good bounces in before having to start all over.

nice tip and harder than you make it sound I'm sure

i like to feel the bottom every 5-10 bounces and get at least that many per cast

definitely needs more lead

The smaller and lighter the better IMHO.

Fairly easy to put on a heavier jig so you can bounce it vertical with the drift, almost straight up and down, but I like making a small profile "bait" offering to the fluke in the bay.  Maybe more akin to matching-the-hatch and imitating what is there than compared to ocean fluking.

What works for me doesn't always work for others. chrz

Nice going Mike sorry to hear about your ankle though.  Did you break it or just sprained it?

I ised a 1oz bucktail with a 4" swimming mullet and did pretty well but no keepers last Wednesday.  I was surprised at the blue though.  It was the last pull of the day and Capt. Mike blew the horn and on the fast retriev I pulled in the blue not bad...

Mild sprain.  Hurt enough that I was not going to stand on it all day as i usually do when at the rail.

Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.
