08/02/09 Tuna Wahoo Report
« on: August 02, 2009, 05:37:47 PM »
Was part of a 4 man aboard the Tuna Wahoo with Capt. Rich Adler at the helm today.Once we cleared the inlet it was decided that we would head southeast towards the ridges as opposed to making the long run to the east. This turned out to be a good decision for two reason;1-With weather coming up from the southwest it made for a much easier ride home with the weather at our backs as opposed to having come at our quarter on the ride in & 2-We caught fish.

Started off on the north Barnegat Ridge. Had a nice spread out on some #30 trolling set-ups and also had 1 #80 class out fit in hopes of something big. We were looking for bluefins, mahi and bonitos. Didn't take long before we had 2 bonito in the box. A little while later had added another bonito and a small false albacore. We switched out all the heavier trolling rods for more appropriate & sporting tackle. All were rigged with Clark spoon with the exception of 1 which was rigged with a small squid daisy chain. We soon had the fish dialed in and had a good 2 hours of solid action with numerous doubles & triple and even one 4 bagger. Most of the fish were bonito in the #3-6 class. In addition we were picking a few spanish mackerel.

With the sky darkening to our southwest we made the 90 minute run for the barn. Just as we got inside the inlet the skies opened up.

Final total for the day was 29 bonito, 7 spanish mackerel and 3 false albacore.

Hey Skolmann,

I saw you guys out there. I was running the party boat Islander, and had our other relief Captain on the Tuna-Tic. We slammed them hard out there. We did come back through those storms though. That was intense.

Yup we saw you guys as well. Bite was insane for a while.

Was that a charter/private party you were running or was that an open trip on the Islander? If it was an open trip, will you be running any more for bonito?

Sounds like a great day!  By the way do you have any good recipes you can share for cooking these little tuna?

Hey Skolmann,

Here is the deal I can run open or private on that boat. The price for a trip like that is $750.00 plus 20% for mates. SO we can have either boat as long as we can cover those numbers. The Tuna-Tic is only able to have up to 6 paying passangers though. The islander up to 49. So 750.00/ 50.00=15 passangers at 50.00 a head. We would draw out of a hat numbers 1-15 and that is the batting order for realing in the fish. Drop your fish, back of the line as if you boated it. Now is the time to get out there. This Saturday is open season for the gill netters those fish will be gone... If any one would like to go call me 609-709-0695
