stretch 25
« on: June 13, 2007, 07:33:48 PM »
in several reports i've read members trolling the stretch 25's and my tackle box felt left out so I ordered 2-3 packs ;D

my question is how are you guys using them? with weight or just a leader and start trolling? also at what speed are you trolling?

thanks for the advice t^

Hi Hareball,

I use 50 lb. Power Pro with a very good ball bearing snap lock. There are directions for speed and line length.

I think I use 150 ft. and slow troll. I troll as slow as I can with Stripers. I try to bang the lure into the bottom and have it bounce up.

I use them in water to about 30 ft.

Stretch 25+ Diving Depths (150 ft. line out)
Lb. Test    Dive Depth
12           30
17           25
30           22
50           18

The Stretch 25+ bait is designed to run at an operating depth of 25 feet on 17 lb. test line at 150 feet from the boat. These baits will dive almost vertically to their operating depth and will track true at trolling speeds up to 10 knots.

I use a few colors ...

Deadly,

Capt. Ed

I believe it might say on the package but it's something like 150' of 17# test mono trolled @ 3-4 knots will get you 25' depth hence stretch 25

i troll them as is, about 150-200 yards out. been getting good success at 3mph per the gps. silver with blue back has been the big hitter for me.

i dont use wire leaders which will eventually lead to a blue swimming away with it. i've lost 1 todate after about 15 monster blues to its credit. i think i got my monies worth out of it, and it was getting beat to hell to anyways.

thanks guys! so if i'm trolling with 80# braid and the fish are at 50 feet can I use a torpedo/cigar weight with a mono leader to get the stretch 25 down to the fish?

I found a guy selling 3 packs for $22 go grabbed 2 of them so my tackle box will have 6 to use.

last year we did alot of trolling with wire and secret spoons and i've been hooked ever since! now I want to expand my trolling gear. TT^
the wire is still in good shape so we are gonna use it some more and then switch it out for braid.

Hi Hareball,

Pete Barrett has a great book out on trolling you should look into.

Anything in the 50 ft. is downriggers or a lot of lead core and weights.

There are stretch 30s.

Anything is possible but I use downriggers if I am going to troll the bottom part of that water column. I can use lighter gear as well.

In reality, 50 ft. of water is best for jigging if you are not a pro on the troll.

Look for Pete's book ... he told me he covered all this material in there. I have not read it yet.

Good luck,

Capt. Ed

thanks capt ed, I have much to learn with trolling, especially the deep water.

mboy, the reel the braid is on will be used for in and offshore trolling and jigging or chunking. it's a torsa 30.

Hi Hareball,

Don't worry about the size of the braid - that will not make or break you.

It is the speed, presentation and boat handling for trolling.

When trolling, I like to weave ... I also try stopping and letting everything fall and then starting up ... to use a basball analogy, the changeup is an effective tool.

Speed - for Stripers ... troll slow!

Presentation - get the lures down to the fish

Oh yeah, if you start catching, keep running over that area ... you may even want to jig at that point.

Get Pete's book and get out on the water and fail ... you will learn more than typing on a keyboard. Making mistakes is good ...

thanks for the tips :)

we discovered the stop and drop by accident. we were trolling 2 bunker spoons and one of the rods went off so I grabbed it and as I got it close my buddy slipped into neutral to come and gaff the fish,,,HUGE blue! it took about a minute for me to get it within reach and the other spoon gets slammed and that reel is peeling line!!

Hey guys, I am new here but I wanted to interject a little on this topic.

I have been using the Stretch 25's for a few weeks now and I have had Great success on the Chartreuese (yellow) stretch 25 and the silver with blue back around Chapel Hill and Flynns knoll.  And like everyone else I use a 40# Brad with 150' of leader to a snap swivel and it works great.

Best of luck
