Striper fishing Rod / Reel
« on: September 12, 2009, 06:57:54 PM »
Took a road trip up to Cabelas this afternoon and was looking at rod and reels.  Would like to get a nice set up for Striper fishing one of these days that will not cost an arm and a leg.  For boat fishing what's a good combination?

The shimano 350 bait runner.  Not sure the best rod for that.

It would help a lot if you give a range of what you want to spend.  Some people's arms and legs are more expensive than others. ;)

If you like spinning, and plan to do some live bait fishing, I'd agree with Hotrod on the reel.  The 3500 or 4500 size Shimano Baitrunners are proven reels.  Since they've just been upgraded, you should be able to find one of the older "B" series reels for under $100.  I know Dick's Sporting Goods stills has a few in stock. ;)

There are many inexpensive rods out there that will work for you.  For an "all around" try that Baitrunner on a 6'6" or 7' rod rated for something like 12-25 or 17-30 lb. line, with a lure rating of about 1-3 oz.

Hope that helps! t^

I have the Shimano 4500 baitrunner matched with the 6' ugly stick bwb114060 and 50# power pro. It's a good all around combo. The only thing bad is if your throwing heavy metal the power pro will cut your finger when casting. Otherwise I've use it for regular lures, livelining, jigging, and even slow trolling.
A good day of fishing is better than a bad day of fishing. A bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work. That means work sucks!

A little band-aid or tape around the finger that holds the line when the bail is opened, works like magic.

I use Curad fabric band aids as they are water proof as well.  The trick is to put them on before you start and get them wet.
