9-20 Bluefish
« on: September 20, 2009, 11:05:29 PM »
Got out late, found some bunker pods just north of Manasquan Inlet. Treble snagged what I thought was a bunker, let him swim a bit. When I brought him up after 15 minutes ( I was going to chunk him), I saw that i had actually snagged a cocktail blue! I was surprised, but I guess that can happen. I threw some metal out, nada. The fish were busting on the top, obviously blues on the bunker. Anyone think I should have thrown a pencil popper out? Would that have been a good thing? Anyhow, did that a while, messed around with a few more bunker pods on the way in, no takers. I was going in the jetty mouth when I saw a boat with 3 guys on it and they were bringing in some small cocktail blues with ava lures (slender metals with red tubes). I tried the same, but maybe 50% of the time my lure came up tangled with the treble hook around the line. The thought occured to me that my retrieve may have been too slow- how fast are you supposed to retrieve for blues? Did the hook get the line on the cast? If that's the case, that would suck and defeat the whole purpose. Any help would be appreciated, I am just trying to learn proper technique... Thanks

Funny, you snagged what you were fishing for...if there were bigger blues in there, they would have devoured the smaller one just as quickly as it would have eaten bunker.  I would have tried some type of surface lure, but I am topwater lure junkie ;D.  I don't think I would have given them my nice pencils, but maybe a polaris popper or a bottle plug.

Do your AVA's have trebles on them?  How about your Hopkins?  I have had problems with losing hook ups with trebles on my Hopkins, so I have gone to a siwash single hook on them.  My AVA's only have single hooks...I have never seen them with trebles before 5hrug?  You might also add a teaser above your lure.  Most of the fish I catch( hhppy) come on the teaser not the metal.

Were you marking fish under or around the bait?  Maybe you weren't getting down to them or maybe your metal was too far below them.  If they were crashing on the surface, I would use a quick retrieve with a Hopkins or spoon of some type and skip the AVA's altogether.  The AVA's, I use more like jigs or with a very slow, bouncing retrieve for more towards the bottom of the water column...unless you know the fish are chasing sand eels and then just go with a lighter AVA and move it along.  Bluefish definitely like faster moving lures.

Hope this helps a little...

Yes, a fairly quick retrieve for bluefish.

Take off the treble hooks and go with a single. It makes removing the hook a whole lot easier and you will still have a very high hook up ratio.

I will also recommend a teaser in front of your lure.

Good luck.  t^
