These people are out of control.

We have to show them that we count. The best way to do that is to show up for the march on washington on Feb 24th.

So, in order to save these fish, they've come up with a season that is two non-consecutive months long.  However, when the season is on you can keep 25 fish?! nts

Wouldn't it benefit the fishing community by cutting back the possession limit to something like 8 or 10 fish and extending the season?

Who needs 25 sea bass anyway? 5hrug

I would get into the details of why a large bag limit is necessary and/or desired for many people and businesses if it were pertinent to the argument, but in this case it is not.

According to their numbers, dropping the bag to 8 or 10 gains you next to nothing (it does not get you July or August or October or even weeks of any of those months) It is one of those cases where a 10 fish limit or a 20 fish limit makes little statistical difference since the preponderance of anglers catch less than that. So, lowering the bag limit by 50% does not give you a 50% reduction. In fact it gives you barely a single percentage point reduction. Until you cut the bag limit to 1, 2, 3, 5 you gain next to nothing. Since July, August, October are high landings months, each day is weighted heavily (especially July and August) meaning even one day is significant in landings.

Drastic cuts to gain productive days is how it works.
Hope that helps answer your questions.

So, they're figuring that most folk are not going to catch their limit, so they might as well leave it at 25.  I guess a high number like that would help the charters and PBs bring more fares aboard.

Thanks Captain. t^

If this fishery is at 104% (I believe that is the right number) of it's recovery status, why is there a 2 month season now when the fish recovered while we were fishing during a 12 months? It just does not add up.  5hrug

Very simple, stop commercial fishing on the sea bass and fluke just like the stripers. Problem solved. Leave us alone! If they are going to allow commercial guys still stay in the game, rod and reel only. They have the ability to wipe out schools and what they throw back is dead... Fish have a better chance if they pull it of the hook and release due to size.

Commercial fishing is not the issue. Recreational fishing is not the issue. No one has wiped out any stock, the stock is at 103% of its rebuilt size.

The commercial quota was cut just as much as ours was this past year.

The issue is that even though the PEER REVIEWED stock assessment says the stock is above its rebuilt target, and the stock NOT overfished, and the stock NOT experiencing overfishing, and the fact is THEY HAVE BEEN WRONG FOR THE PAST NUMBER OF YEARS when they thought the stock was NOT rebuilt and when they thought the stock WAS overfished, but they did nothing about all of those facts.

The issue is that despite all of those FACTS the SSC decided that since the stock assessment is "new" that they would IGNORE all of the conclusions of the stock assessment and keep the quota AT THE SAME LEVEL IT WAS WHEN THEY THOUGHT THE STOCK WAS IN TROUBLE just to "BE PRECAUTIONARY."

So, when you have the lowest quota in the history of Sea Bass management but have a healthy stock, you get the BS regs we have now that are designed to keep us within the ridiculously low quota. Combine that with the fact that they say we caught way more fish than we are allowed to keep, and the regs get even tighter while the quota stays at an all time low while the stock is at its peak.

THAT my friends in the BS we are dealing with.

Scary

Dont really understand the concept...

If you rebuild a fishery ... More fish are available to be caught and will be caught...

If you dont get a higher quota... then you cacth more then your allowed and be penalized...

Shouldnt we be rewarded with a higher quota or bag limit... no?

Where is the reward in rebuilding a fishery???

Emergency closure on a completely rebuilt stock...No winter time fishery for the large party boats... This is a very scary precedent alone...

So all the hard work all these years and size restrictions / shorter seasons on fluke so we can rebuild the stock... then we will catch to many and then they could just scratch their had and close that down.

That Jerry, is one of the reasons I dislike the survey calls from the regulators.

Tell them you caught your limit on most trips and they accuse you of overfishing and shut you down.

Tell them you did not catch a lot and they say that is because there are no fish there and they shut you down.

Either way, you lose.  nosmly

I do not trust these people even a little.  >:(

Im with ya joe

WE pay their saleries, they shut us down for no good reason.
Then we pay and get lawyers to challenge their logic. They get lawyers to fight us and we pay for them too.
We finally get our day in court, and guess what the fisherie is reopened ,not cause we proved our selves correct but the time limit for the closure is up,
So nothing is resolved , we spent alot of money, they can do this again and again etc.
The lawyers and the BLOB are the only ones to profit, And we loose, we loose our money, we loose our tiny bit of time here to enjoy our passion and all because they figured out we have deep pockets and we will spend more to do what we love to do    5hrug
