Rod Rack
« on: January 26, 2010, 12:38:10 PM »
Okay so with the new IBSP pass i purchased i really wanna let up some room inside my land rover and get a rod rack im thinking for the rear of my vehichle cause my wife drives sometimes  _:" and shes already complaining at the thought of it on the front

i noticed most are extremely pricey but was curios if most of you built yours or if you know of a cheap manuafacturer

This would be for a 2 inch reciever

Thanks guys  t^

Just a thought. If you put a rod rack in the back of the truck will you still have access to the inside from the rear?

You can put a removable Rack on the front.  That way when your wife drives the vehicle, you can just take it off.  The back racks could be removable too and fit in a hitch receiver.  I have seen some racks where you can tilt them down so you can access the tailgate.

I have seen a few done by a guy/company in Bayville.  Let me search some and see if I can come up with the info.  If I remember correctly, they were much better priced than others and better quality.

Being able to open the tailgate depends on the vehicle design as well as the rack design.

I made a cooler / rod rack based on an affordable (aka cheap) hitch mounted cargo rack.
Holds the 100qt cooler, bait cooler, 4 rods, shovel, etc.  It sits low enough that the tailgate clears and I can stand between the bumper and the rack to access the truck interior.
The rack is alum., the rod holders are PVC w/ rubber fittings and all bolts are stainless.
Whole thing cost maybe $100-125.  I couldn't see spending $300-400 on a rack.  I'd rather spend that extra on gear to catch fish.  Some day I'll drop the money for a nice cooler rack, but for now this serves me well.

That's a nice design there Chris.

Pennsy, I have a rod holder on the front of my truck. I put a 2 inch receiver on the front and the rod holder removes when I don't want it on. That would cure the wife thing. It will cost you more for the receiver though.

thinking about this off of ebay with the tilt option

This guys stuff looks nice and the price seems good too. I was looking at the rod holder that bolts to the tool box. I'm going to give him a call one of these day and see if I can take a ride to his place an look at his stuff and see what I would like.

I bought a smaller rack and for a while I had it on the back of the Expedition but had to take it off every time I wanted to open the back.  I went to Hecht Bros. and found that they had a 2" receiver that can be mounted up front.  It is a bit costly but I had it done and it is perfect.  East to remove the rack with just one pin and she is off.  It ran a little over $225.00 for installation and the receiver hitch.

Happy Catching

the guy who does these is in town by me. my step pop had him make up a rack with a mounting system that fit into the existing mounting set up he had for a cooler rack. (not hitch mounted)

this was a couple years ago and its still going strong, looks good and ron said he was a pretty decent guy, and will customize stuff for ya.

Here is the rod rack I made.  It works well if you have a pickup.  Materials are a few 2x4's, a 2x6, some 2" pvc and a few lag bolts.  Few bucks cheaper too.

Wow country, that is amazing!

With that said, I have a 6 tube rod-rack on the front of my truck, but it's bolted directly to the bumper. It's not an eyesore, as you can barely see the rack from the inside of the truck. The whole thing cost about $125.00.

Eng5Lt's idea is really nice tho. I like the whole cooler rack, shovel holder, rod holder etc. I put a bolt in the middle of my shovel, so it can fit inside of my rod rack.  nts

But like everyone said, you can get a "hitch" installed either on the front or the back of your truck, and attach the rod rack to it, so you can remove it with ease. But, if you do decide to attach it to a hitch, make sure you purchase one of these.

Thanks fellas.  Here is a pic with the tailgate up so it doesn't look all crapy.

Funny thing is the bottom is framed with 2x4's the cross board is a 2x6 so it is not too light, but when you get going down the road, it is amazing how much those rods sticking up will catch the wind and start to push back towards the tail gate.  That is why you will notice the bungee across the top of the reels for safety and I have a couple of sandbags I place on the frame to keep the rods from sailing back towards the tailgate.

The Palm Trees; Used to live in San Diego.  That is where the pic was taken.  Good to be back on the east coast, but I am missing the San Diego temps this weekend.

Concerning the comment about the amount of rods.  That is some of 'em.  My theory on rods is; That you must have more rods than she has shoes!
