Weakfish and the surf.
« on: January 30, 2010, 09:52:43 AM »
Is is possible to catch weakfish from IBSP? May sound like a silly question, but I'd like to get out there and fish as much as possible.

It is possible, but not many are caught out front.  Walk to the back along the wall of bags and get down to the water and work the flats and cuts in the spring.  The blues are there starting around Mothers Day in swarms.

The back. Is the the "Back of the inlet" at the southern end of IBSP? I was told about a few blackfish holes back there, but wasn't able to locate them.  _:"

We have to set a day to go on the beach. What I'd do to be able to pick your brain all day.  ;D Come spring, I will be calling you!

I hear ya Jeff.  and yes that is the back of the inlet.  There are some nice cuts and flats there plus if you take a walk back there you will be amazed at all the great looking spots and holes.

I did take a far, far walk down and around. As another fisherman told me. "Go down the big rocks, until the big rocks, turn into little rocks."

During low tide, there was a "beach of rocks" that I was able to climb down, and fish from there. I do remember a little bit, but I'll just have to wait and see!

Yeah there is a group of rocks out about 50 yards or so the I call the mussel rocks as they are full of them there is usually something lurking around them.

I'll most definitely have to keep that in mind.

It's been really hard to catch any weakies the last couple of years.  The boats do much better than the shore guys, but it is still possible.  Bucktail got a few nice ones springtime last year.  I targeted them later, like I always have and was not successful.  Earlier may be better 5hrug?

We used to get weakfish in good numbers and size in the surf all the time.  Now, it is almost amazing to hear of one being caught in the surf nosmly.  Farther into the Bay and up Rivers have been as productive as the bayside at IBSP.

The spring spawners are few and far between but there were several over 10# that I know were caught last year in Barnegat bay. Summer weaks have been almost invisible in the northern bay but September had a couple of weeks of good fishing for spikes to 18". Most guys catch them by accident while bass fishing. New regs coming are pretty scary, maybe 1 fish   nosmly

Unfortunately, I don't think the Regs will affect an almost nonexistant fishery and I don't think anyone could argue that there probably should be stricter Regs or even a moratorium placed on weakfish.  Whatever the reason is, the weakfish are in trouble and I miss the abundance of fish there used to be nosmly _:".
