Montauk Cod trip 1/30
« on: January 31, 2010, 09:25:57 AM »
rode up to Montauk Friday night with friend Ken and his wife Nichole, and friends of theirs,Rob and Eric.we  followed Ken's friend Capt Kurt and Jimmy in their vehicle.we got there around 10:30 to the Viking Fleet.the wind was blowing, flags straight out,had to be blowing a good 30 plus.we put our poles on the stern and hung around here until around midnight and then hit the liars Saloon down the road for a few drinks,if anyone goes up there you have to stop there,it's slogan is a drinking bar with a fishing problem.stayed here about an hour and went back and boarded The Viking Star Ship with our gear.boat left at 3,there wasn't enough water in the harbor for the boat, with the high winds and tide, had to power out, running a ground a bit.it was a smooth ride out even with some rough seas.got to the fishing grounds around 5:30 and I was one of the first at the rail fishing,at first I'm thinking do I want to be here  nosmly it was almost unbearable to fish, wind still blowing hard and some good swells.nothing for a while,a lot of the guys went back in the cabin until they knew fish were coming over the rail.finally after day break a fish coming in every once in awhile, had to use a lot of weight to hold bottom,I had 26 ounces on.the wind did die down and the seas laid down as the day went on.the day was mostly a no pick to a very slow pick,at times even a dog fish was welcomed for the action.between the 5 of us Ken,Nichole,Rob,Eric and myself were able to put 18 cod in the coffin,I got three myself,Ken had one that was in contention for the pool for a very short while.even though the fishing was slow had a great time, lots of laughs with Capt Kurt,Jimmy and Jimmy's friend Johnny and we did bring home some meat.wanted to take more pics but didn't,snapped a few of the fish at the end of the day.got back home around 9 last night, this oldman still feels beat up this morning.  Kez
