Boating Courses
« on: February 01, 2010, 07:39:54 PM »
I have taken the NJ state boating safety course and I am looking to see if any one does on water training?.. I am looking at getting a 21-25' center console in the future and I would like to be a more skilled boater.

Nice Parker in the avatar by the way.  If i can find one in good shape for under $30,000, that would be my boat of choice

There was a guy in Barnegat that gave courses. I will have to check. I can't remember his name.

I dont get this whole course thing.  I am taking an on line course, then I guess I have to find a testing place and show my course certificate to be able to take the test.  I think

I may be wrong.  but I don't think NJ excepts the online class.  I think you have to take a sit in class and test.  Capt. Dave can answer this question..  Also The state Police done away with the opt out test.

I would think so too. Its a big time buyers  market right now. Just take your time in the purchase there are so many boats out there to look at.  TT^

Took the online class last year and then found a testing spot down the street from me in point pleasant, showed up tok the test and NJSP mailed me my card two weeks later.

Don't mean to change the subject but i've looked at Boat Trader and Salty Dog and cant find too many Parker Pilot House.

If I'm not mistaken, I think you can test out without actually taking the course.  Pretty sure I saw the test out option at a fishing flea market for $25.  If you were to fail, you may then have to take the course.  As for on the water training, maybe try googling it?

I took the test out option several years ago. Prior to that i had some experienced friends teach me the "rules of the road" and basic seamanship. I found pratice makes perfect and I am still learning something new everytime I go out...taking and/or being shown any advice I can get. A book on basic navagation/seamanship is a good place to start.
