Need some advise on jig making problem
« on: February 20, 2010, 11:23:23 AM »
I am trying to pour some Spro jigs and having a problem. I can’t seem to get the lead to go all of the way into the mold, down the shank of the hook. I tried to pouring some without hooks to warm up the mold and they come out fine. Once I put the hook in the mold, I can only get it to go half to three quarters of the way around the shank of the hook.
Sounds like it’s too cold, so I put hooks in the mold and let it sit for awhile so the hook would get some temp and it didn’t seem to help.
The hooks are the correct size for the mold.
I have tried it several times getting the mold temp up to 225 degrees.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Rick

When I have that problem I let the lead heat up a little longer. Seems to cure it for me.  t^

Also, make sure you are not pouring too slowly. If you do that, it allows the lead that is already poured to harden and block the opening in the mold.

Rick,

I usually pour two times blind ( no hooks )
That gets the mold up to temp...

I have found that the lead needs to be hot beyond the melting point and you need to pour fast....

From what you explained Rick, you need to get the lead hotter and keep the mold warmed up.If the lead is hotter it will pour easier and faster.
Keep in mind the outside temp. will have an effect on the pour and mold. You gotta be Hot Hot Hot to Trot. t^
