Wind
« on: April 23, 2010, 10:31:41 AM »
I had a friendly argument with a buddy about wind direction. rgmn
I argued that a "West" wind in fact blows East (from the West) as a SE wind blows NW etc.

He mentioned the old sailors saying

"when the wind blows West-fishing is best"

Is this to say that in reality a true East wind is best for fishing??

I know there are several sayings out there, but some may have it backwards. Anybody care to clear this up?  :headscra:

My contention was always a Easterly wind (blowing West) was best 5hrug

You are correct.  Wind direction is where it's coming from.

As far as which wind is best, I would argue that it depends on where you are fishing.

West wind means the wind is blowing in the west direction, or West to East.

East wind means the wind is blowing in the east direction, or East to West.

When the wind blows for the east, the fishing is the least, when the wind blows from the west, the fishing is at it's best.

Just to add more confusion. The wind is called East when it blows from the East and is going to the West but a South tide is coming from the North and moving to the South. Another way to look at it, a boat drifting in an East wind will move to the West but a boating drifting in a South Tidal Current will go South.

Usually, just like when the water goes down the drain.  Water will usually flow in a clock wise direction as it goes down the drain in the northern latitudes and flows counter clockwise south of the equator.
