Just bought this rod and reel ......
« on: May 14, 2010, 11:25:24 AM »
Ok, bought a SP1101 7' Medium Heavy, 8-20 lb line, ugly stick for like 45$. It is a one piece, I am not a fan of one piece sticks, but it should do. And an Okuma Trio 55 for 80$. How does that sound, with 20 lb mono.

One thing about the Trio is that it is a combination of Aluminum and graphite. The reel seat is screwed to the body so I would think that that would be the weak spot and possible trouble later on.

Hey paul, is it not going to work? Something going to happen to it if I get a striper on? It may be too late as I have it all lined with a 9 inch rubber swim shad on it.

Hey Mark, all I am saying is that the initial design is questionable.  It will work just like anything else.  I am just pointing out a flaw that I would question especially if you have a larger fish on.

What do you mean "the reel seat is screwed to the body"?  I don't understand that statement.  Can you elaborate?

It is very simple...the gear housing is made of graphite and the reel seat and connecting arm to the housing are aluminum.  In order to connect the two they used screws...

Its a nice looking reel but I don't like the hybrid design especially where they made the compromise.

This design is in the 40 and 55 models.

OK.  Gotcha.  That is very different.  I wonder what the reasoning was behind that. :headscra:

I think it is just to cut the weight down.  But it looks like that there could be other areas to do that but not there.  Or to use a composite over an aluminum rod in side for added rigidity and strength.
