Still Running......NOT!
« on: May 30, 2010, 04:58:54 PM »
Hit the bay today and made two short drifts when I went to start the engine to make a third drift I had a no start. Waited for about 45 Min on Boat US. Just before he got to me it started and ran fine back to the dock. Once I had her tied up I tried three or four times to start and turn it of and it did fine. I let it sit for about an hour and then the no start. rgmn Going back down in the AM to see what happens after sitting over night. May have to give Matt from Task Marine a call to see if he will come up and look at it.

Need to get back out on the water

Intermittent problems are the worse.  Check your grounds, not visually but pull them off and clean them.  Good Luck.

Here’s what I got. If anyone has an idea of what to check, let me know.
It’s a 1988 Yamaha 200 hp

When I left the boat last night it wouldn’t start, just the crank. Today I went down, gave the bulb two pumps and it fired up just like always and ran fine. I let it run for about ten minutes and shut it down. Tried to restart and it did. I let it sit for about 45 min and it started up, so I ran it for another 10 at half throttle and turned it off. Let it sit for 45 min again and the no start. When this happens as soon as I turn the key it sounds like one cylinder hits and then nothing just crank. It seems to me that something is getting heat soaked while sitting and not working. As soon as it cools down enough it starts and runs fine. The last three weekends I would troll for at least 4 hours and never had a problem, but I never shut it down and let it sit for 45 min. If you can think of anything for me to check, let me know. I appreciate it.

Sounds very similar to vapor lock we used to get in the older cars. Have you changed anything in the fuel system recently? Different hoses? Longer hose? Re-routed?

I did find this. Don't know if it will help or not, just something to consider.

1988 does that have a coil and condenser? If so they can act really strange at times. When it will not start check and see if you have spark.

Good luck!!

I will have to check that Joe. I forgot to bring the portable fuel tank with me today. I wanted to hook it up when I have the problem to see if it starts.

Thanks AJ  t^

Yea rod easy once I find it. I Hope  rgmn

I think it has a coil for each cylinder and they all can’t be screwed up at once, I don’t think.

intermittent ground to the motor, likely the rectifier/regulator ground or the stator ground. Loose/broken/corroded. Run a new wire temporarily to a convenient (unpainted) bolt on the motor right to battery ground and see if the problem goes away. You'll still need to find it but at least you'll know it's the ground (or not.) Did you change out the wing nuts on the battery posts with locknuts?

Rick, still an issue?
Seems to me an electrical issue. Possible intermittent operation of a powerpack. Ignition Switch? Flywheel magnets? loose? Shifted? If a fuel issue, this thing would not even run as good as it is when its runnin. Back to basics, this is a simple 2 stroke. No computer. If you disconnect the remote harness at the motor you can still start and run this with a remote starter. I just can't free myself from the yard but if you want to take the ride, we'll get'er fixed.
