6/19 Fluka's Back
« on: June 20, 2010, 01:32:15 PM »
After talking to the Cummins mechanic about our engine troubles on the way down to NJ last week(see boating forum), the plan was made to head out Saturday for a combination troubleshooting/ Fluking trip...Buddies Dibbs and Dougger met me at the dock in Keansburg at 0600 ready for either a long day fishing, or a short paddle home. :-\  lines off at 6:15 and off we go..The boat ran like nothing was ever wrong, but I wanted to keep fairly close just in case, so made our 1st stop on the reach near K-burg.. First drift on the late outgoing took us  quick across the channel from green to red, and  produced bites right off.. I flipped the first shortie of the season over the rail before we hit the downslope, and as we come up the other side, Doug flops our first keeper of about 20" on the deck..  clp and so it begins.. We work a few stops around the Reach for a while with constant action on shorts, and I manage my 1st keep.. another nice 20" We then head towards the Hook.. more to run the boat than anything.. Find more of the same there.. steady pick.. mostly short.. averaged about a 15/1 short/keeper ratio.. Noticed more action on the flats than in the channels today.. Ran outside and worked from the tip to the nude beach, than back in for the last of the incoming around the TC..avoidng what appeared to be the Spanish Armada out on the Reach..  Took a fuel run/ joyride up to Twin Lights at the slack, and then headed west to finish the day with a few drifts back around Keansburg before heading back through the floodgate at about 6pm.. Totals for the day where around 70 Fluke, 5 of which where keepers.. All the Keepers where nice 20-22 " fish.. nothing big, but no "just barely's"  either.. Other than Fluke, we had a few Blues early around the Reach, and only 1 bird all day!!  TT^  Used our usual Fluke buffet items.. Squid (strips and whole) Spearing and Peruvians,  and various Gulps..with Peruv's holding a slight edge on the keeper tally.. Although we had a pretty brisk wind most of the day  I worked bucktails whenever possible with good results.. Sorry no pics this time, as I left the camera in the truck.. Hopefully boat issues are behind us.. it sure felt great to be back in NJ!  t^  chrz

What a start!
Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.

Good job on the Fluka.  What was the final diagnosis?

Nice trip.  I fished a lot of the same areas and had the same results.  5 keepers to 4lbs with the largest from the TC buoy.  Same baits too.

Thanks guys... Still not 100% sure Pilot as we could not duplicate the issue..  but we are leaning toward a vacuum building in the tank on the long run.. thinking  cracking the fuel cap woulda cured it.. Kinda  wish it would act up again so we can test the theory.. but we'll just have to fish till it  does i guess  TT^
