Is bigger better
« on: June 28, 2010, 03:57:12 PM »
Just want to ask about bait size for fluke. I was always told big bait for big fluke but what if they are feeding on shrimp or spearing they are not big. I downsized my buck-tails a little this year and went to a white and brown color closer to shrimp and the did very well with the bigger fish (18" +)Just curious.

One thing always come to mind...match the hatch. If you do that, you can't go wrong.  t^

yes, for fluke, bigger is better.  A large Fluke, "lazy" won't waste his energy on small food.

Good

Depends where ya fishing in the bay ya tend to catch some bigger fish on smaller baits and Jigs and a big bucktail wont get a look.

But if ya fish deep rocky areas They usuallywont be eating shrimp or spearing... Big Bucktails and Big baits... Everything(bait n Jigs) we use is 6 in or bigger and it works great on big fluke anything smaller and it gets harassed by little mini c bass

But dont fix if it isnt broken. Use what works for ya.

Just remember, elephants eat peanuts. ;)

T and I catch the majority of our fish, mostly in the bay, on small bucktails with small baits.  Sometimes that's what they want, something small. As stated before, match the hatch.

A bigger bait should weed out smaller fish, though sometimes you pass quantity for quality.  With current regs, could be well worth it.

Do know plenty of big fish caught on small offerings. Bay, ocean, rocks...fly fishing, bucktailing, bait.

good thread
I like to use the smallest bucktail that will hold. Maybe 1oz in the right conditions but usually more.
For the 'mats livin' near the rocks it usually takes 4oz+
If draggin bait, match the hatch.

I believe the key is in the flip o da strip on da tip

Really?...I've seen the opposite many times. I still maintain a hungry doormat isn't going to pass up a meal right in front of his face even if its small.

The most important thing to consider when targeting these large fish is actually locating them.

A bottom fish, the fluke is somewhat lazy and will wait in the current for food to be swept his/her way.

Fluke, and all fish are just like women.  When they want your "bait", they want you to present it big.  When they're not in the mood, it just doesn't matter  ;D
