Islander Cod Report from 11-3-10

Another good trip trip on the Islander.

The seas were absolutely flat today with little or no wind at all. It made positioning on small snags very tough, and the number of cod fish caught today was down from the last trip.

We fished 3 wrecks 35 to 40 miles offshore in the 120 to 160 foot range. We had 18 guys on the boat and ended up with 70 keeper cod and about the same amount of shorts. We also had 2 dozen sea bass in the 3 to 6 pound range, and a handful of ling. The dog fish were a big problem today, even chasing up hooked cod and biting off their tails.

Although the cod numbers were down this trip, we landed a bunch of nice sized cod including the pool winning 45 pounder and a 31 pounder that took second place. We haven't seen those size cod off New Jersey in many years.

      For the depths that they are fishing conventional reels in the 3/0 size or the eqivalent of a Penn jigmaster would do it. I used my Avet sx on a recent Gambler trip with no problem. Had my Daiwa saltist 40 as my bigger set up and never even picked it up. Those 40# fish are rare but once out of the wreck 10#'s of drag is all that is needed. Jersey cod  TT^,awesome fish  ;D

Slap a rod on that???

And what about a NJSWF cod trip this winter/spring???

I like a 3/0 "30" class reel with 65-80lb Braid. The high gear ratio with a retrieve of 38-42" per crank makes it easier on the angler. 20-40 lb class rod 6'6 is also a nice match. The most important thing is the braid and a medium to heavy action rod. Everything else is just luxury. Most of your striper or wreck fish outfits should be fine.  That is my two cents.
