Autumn Bass Fall Short For Me ....HELP!!!
« on: November 16, 2010, 05:39:44 PM »
Ok so the forum is called "Helping Each other Out." With that being said, I am in some serious need of some bass before the long anticipated "fall run" has run its course, and the way things have been going so far I wouldn't be able to exactly call it a good one. At this point Im beginning to think im just cursed. I mean I tried every kind of bate, live or artificial. Ive tried every spot on the map from the Hudson to  Point Pleasant. I popped, plugged, and prayed to the fish gods. I even offered a sacrifice. Seriously my fellow FINatics, I need to know what am I doing wrong. Where do i need to be this weekend and with what bait?? I gotta tell ya, no man likes asking for directions, we all know this. I apparently have not much choice. Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, from what Ive read so far Im sure I wont be steared wrong.

In My opinion...  for surf fishing.  95% of it is being at the right place... at the right time.  the other 5% is your offering when that time comes..

Where do you live ? You can't be everywhere. These fish aren't showing with birds etc... So far it's been picky even on the good days in my area.Be early ....first light is always good. I have had action on metal/teaser but only a pick after last Thursday's NE blow. I only fish artificials. Rough surf lately but bass are there. Winds are going west after the rain tonight so this may trigger better fishing  ;D

Lately, it seems like there's been a more active bite on the outgoing side of the tide.  Put your time in and be sure your fishing the holes, and not atop a sandbar and you will get yours.  Here's a good article on "reading the water".  It goes into detail on how the waves and what not, can help you determine underwater structure.

Best of luck out there!  t^

Go out on The Fisherman with Capt Ron, he's putting together catches everyday for his customers. If catching fish is the objective, that's your best bet. Just watch his videos if you need to convince yourself!

If it's the challenge of figuring it out from the surf, it really is all about being in the right place at the right time. I agree with with an earlier post which said that dawn is the best time.

Good luck.

We are both from union beach I know I shouldn't have a problem catchin bass living in this prime location. And normally we pull in our share but this fall run though for me started out good has since been miserable, I've go to the beach at low to read the sand then at high fish it and still no luck, it also seems whenever we go were the only ones on the beach then wheb I read the reports people say there catching were we were throwing what we were at the time we were and I never see anyone. Seems like we always just miss the bite. But sometimes we don't get to fish in ideal conditions because of that job thing so its probably not so much our tactics, but having the ability to get out as often as wed like

I really feel for you guys, but there is no easy way to say it, you have to put your time in.  With that said, fishing the surf is no easy task but it can be productive.  I have been fishing the Ocean County beaches for over 50 years and there are days even weeks where I get the short end of the skunk.

Right now is the prime time, and by now I mean this time of the year and not exactly in fact now.  The weather has been off the past few days and the water clarity has been terrible to say the least.  You guys have to have patience and hang in there.  Hang at a bait and tackle shop that caters to the surf fishermen and just listen to the chatter that goes on.

There are guys in the shops that I do business with that are from Pa. so the mileage thing should not come into play here.  You want fish?  Well the ultimate fish-finder in this case is the B&T.

I grew up around the surf and I know many of the old timers that still get out and fish everyday.  If you can latch onto one of these guys it would be an eye opener.  Just one example there is a gent named Steve, he has problems casting far but he will out fish just about anyone that is on the beach around him.  I know, about 3 weeks ago I was fishing along side him and for a while we were going fish for fish as the blues were in solid.  Well at one point I looked over at him and he was huffing and puffing on this one fish so I decided to help him and when it got close enough to the beach I grabbed it for him.  I dehooked it and weighed it for him (16#).  He looked at me and just smiled, no words needed.  What goes around comes around.

You do something like that and in no time you will be fishing with legends.  So you see, this fishing thing takes time to figure out but when you realize you are catching on a regular basis, you probably are now part of the process.  That process is like a brotherhood of sorts.  We watch out for each other especially when on the beach.

Don't rush it, it will find you.  In the mean time my best advice is to just listen.  It will speak louder than you can imagine.

Happy Catching

whs  clp  ;D I am a member of the Spring Lake Live liners surf fishing club. Being part of this club has helped me learn that surf fishing and fishing from land is  very challenging (humbling). I also frequent a couple of the local tackle tackle shops. These associations plus "friends" in the fishing community have helped me understand surf fishing better. It's not just right time/right place. The bass can be everywhere these days and "nowhere".It helps to be able to fish on most any day that I want too  ;D

Al,

I am with you on this, but I gotta be honest.  Union Beach, Keansburg, Cliffwood, Keyport have been getting reports in the Fisherman and by local bait shops regularly, but I just haven't seen it at all.  In fact, with the exception of a few reports from around the railroad bridge, I haven't seen one good reliable bay report at all.  This past Saturday I stayed in the bay and went all over the place and found no bait, no birds, no life anywhere.  I don't mean to target any individual bait shop, but their job is to sell bait.  If the fish are nowhere near their bait shop, they're not necessarily going to come out and say that.  Just my two cents.  Every report I've seen has the fish offshore.
The cure for everything is salt water: sweat, tears, and the sea.
